The Root of Modesty and Faith

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 9
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Faith (Belief) consists of more than sixty branches. And Haya (modesty, self-respect, bashfulness, and moral conscience) is a part of faith.”

What is Haya?

Haya is a deep inner feeling of shame and honor that prevents a person from committing indecent acts or even approaching them – whether in public or in secret. It includes:

  • Modesty in speech and behavior
  • Humility before Allah and His creation
  • Guarding one’s eyes, tongue, and actions
  • Sensitivity toward sin

It’s not just “shyness,” but a spiritual shield rooted in one’s awareness of Allah.

How is Haya a part of faith?

  • Faith drives us to obey Allah, and Haya protects us from disobeying Him.
  • Just like a tree has branches, faith grows and spreads through actions – Haya is one of the most visible fruits of this tree.
  • The stronger the Haya, the more a person distances themselves from vulgarity, shamelessness, and rebellion.

What do we learn today?

In today’s world of hyper-exposure, vulgar entertainment, and normalized shamelessness:

  • Haya is resistance – it keeps believers from falling into the traps of modern-day fitnah (temptation).
  • Haya means guarding your gaze, your clothing, your online activity, and your dignity.
  • It teaches us that true faith is not just belief in the heart, but something that manifests in our lifestyle, especially in how we carry ourselves with dignity and respect.

No Haya = No faith.
Lose Haya, and faith weakens.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 24:30
Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity; that is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is All-Aware of what they do.
Modesty starts with the eyes – controlling desires starts with guarding what you see.

📖Quran 24:31
And tell the believing women to lower their gaze, guard their chastity, and not expose their adornment except what is apparent…
Haya is not gender-specific – both men and women are called to uphold modesty.

📖Quran 96:14
Does he not know that Allah sees?
Real Haya comes when you remember Allah is always watching, even when no one else is.

Haya is not weakness – it’s a strength of the heart.
When people lose shame, they lose guidance. Islam preserves honor by planting Haya deep inside the soul – because a heart that fears shame before Allah can never be corrupted.
