Increasing Greeting with Peace

📖Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2689
Narrated ‘Imran bin Husain: A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘As-Salamu ‘Alaykum (Peace be upon you).’
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Ten [rewards].’ Then another came and said: ‘As-Salamu ‘Alaykum Wa Rahmatullah (Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah).’ The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Twenty [rewards].’ Then another came and said: ‘As-Salamu ‘Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh (Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah, and His blessings).’ The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Thirty [rewards].’

Explanation

This hadith emphasizes the immense spiritual value of greeting others with peace and increasing its blessings. The repetition of greetings with additional words serves a logical purpose:

1️⃣ Gradual Increase in Goodness

  • The Prophet (ﷺ) demonstrates that adding more supplications to the greeting increases one’s rewards. This method of step-by-step encouragement teaches that simple acts, when enhanced, bring greater blessings.
  • Similar to how acts of worship (prayer, charity, dhikr) increase in reward based on sincerity and effort, greetings also hold varying degrees of reward.

2️⃣ Establishing a Culture of Peace and Blessings

  • Islam promotes a culture of peace, and the greeting is not just a formality but a prayer for well-being.
  • Saying “As-Salamu ‘Alaykum” is not merely a social norm but an invocation for the other person’s safety, mercy, and divine blessings.
  • The Qur’an supports this in:
    📖Surah An-Nisa (4:86)
“And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet with one better than it, or return it. Indeed, Allah is ever, over all things, an Accountant.”
  • This verse encourages responding with an equal or better greeting, reinforcing the idea of adding more supplications for greater benefit.

3️⃣ Why Repeat the Same Words?

  • In many religious and worldly matters, repetition strengthens remembrance and engrains values in the heart.
  • Just as prayers, supplications, and Qur’anic verses are repeated for emphasis and impact, the repetition of the greeting serves to reinforce kindness and gratitude.
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) himself repeated key teachings multiple times to ensure they were understood and implemented.

4️⃣ A Practical Reminder of Allah’s Mercy

  • Each additional phrase in the greeting reflects a greater acknowledgment of Allah’s kindness.
  • “Wa Rahmatullah” reminds the listener of Allah’s mercy,
  • “Wa Barakatuh” invokes blessings, reinforcing positivity and hope.
  • This mirrors the Qur’anic teaching:
    📖Surah Al-Ahzab (33:43)
“It is He who sends blessings upon you, and His angels (ask Him to do so) so that He may bring you out of darkness into light. And He is Most Merciful to the believers.”
  • The greeting serves as a reminder that Allah’s mercy and blessings are always present in the lives of believers.

The blessings in this greeting do not mean that simply thinking about something for another person will make it happen. Rather, it is an expression of love and a way of spreading peace. The one who gives this greeting shows care and goodwill, while the reward for it—whether in this world or the afterlife—remains unknown.
