Punishment for Negligence and Backbiting
📖Sunan Ibn Mājah 349
Abu Bakrah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by two graves and he said, “Verily, they are both being punished, but not for a sin difficult to avoid. As for one, he is punished for the habit of soiling himself with urine. As for the other, he is punished for the habit of backbiting.”
This hadith emphasizes that even sins which seem small or easy to avoid can lead to punishment if a person neglects them knowingly.
- “Soiling himself with urine” means the person was careless about cleanliness after relieving himself, leaving traces of impurity on the body or clothes, which invalidates prayer and shows disregard for purity in worship.
- Backbiting here means speaking about someone behind their back in a way they would dislike. Since Allah has made repentance and forgiveness open, this punishment shows they neither repented nor sought forgiveness. These were forgivable sins, but because they knowingly persisted without repentance, they faced consequences in the grave.
Lessons we learn today:
- Personal hygiene matters – Neglecting small habits like cleanliness can have major spiritual consequences.
- Purity is linked to worship – Without proper purification, even prayer is not valid.
- Words can destroy – Backbiting may feel easy but is spiritually deadly.
- No sin is “too small” – What we think is minor can become major in Allah’s sight.
- Seeking forgiveness is key – Even forgivable sins become punishable if done knowingly without repentance.
- Social impact – Neglect of hygiene spreads disease, while backbiting destroys relationships and community trust.
- Hidden deeds count – Just because people cannot see them, Allah still holds us accountable.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 2:222
Indeed, Allah loves those who rely upon Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves.
Purification from physical impurity (like urine) and inner sins (like backbiting) is beloved to Allah.
📖Quran 49:12
O you who have believed, avoid much suspicion. Indeed, some suspicion is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse directly condemns backbiting and reminds believers that repentance is always available, but deliberate persistence brings punishment.
📖Quran 4:17
Allah only accepts the repentance of those who do evil ignorantly or carelessly and then repent soon after. It is they to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.
This shows that their punishment was because they did not repent when they had the chance, despite knowing their sins.
