The Blessings of Health and Free Time
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 6412
Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “There are two blessings that many people are deceived into losing: health and free time.”
Explanation and Lessons from This Hadith
This hadith highlights two valuable blessings, health and free time, that people often take for granted. The Prophet (ﷺ) warns that many are deceived by these gifts, failing to use them wisely until they are lost. The deception lies in assuming these blessings will always remain, leading to negligence in utilizing them for good.
Key Lessons and Islamic Context
1️⃣ Health: A Priceless Blessing
- Good health allows us to fulfill our religious duties, engage in productive work, and enjoy life. However, many neglect their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
- The Qur’an reminds us to be grateful for our bodies and take care of them:
📖Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195)
“And do not throw [yourselves] with your own hands into destruction. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.” - Islam encourages maintaining health through balanced eating, exercise, and proper rest, as the body is an Amanah (trust) from Allah.
2️⃣ Time: A Limited and Precious Resource
- Time is one of the greatest tests in life. Many waste it on trivial matters or delay good deeds, only realizing its value when it is too late.
- The Qur’an emphasizes the fleeting nature of time and urges believers to use it wisely:
📖Surah Al-‘Asr (103:1-3)
“By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.” - This verse reminds us that time should be invested in faith, good deeds, and guiding others toward righteousness.
3️⃣ The Deception of Neglect
- People often realize the value of health only when they fall ill and the importance of time only when it runs out. The Prophet (ﷺ) warns against this deception so that we may act before it is too late.
- The Qur’an warns against delaying good actions:
📖Surah Al-Munafiqun (63:10)
“And spend [in the way of Allah] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, ‘My Lord, if only You would delay me for a short time so I could give charity and be among the righteous.’” - This verse reminds believers to seize opportunities in life before they vanish.
