Thanking Allah for Your Food

📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3458
Mu’adh ibn Anas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever eats a meal and says, ‘All praise is due to Allah, who fed me this from His provision without any capability or strength on my part,’ his previous minor sins will be forgiven.”

Description:
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of gratitude to Allah for our sustenance. Saying this acknowledgment reminds us that it is not our effort alone that feeds us. “Who fed me” does not imply that Allah physically prepares the food or cooks it Himself; rather, He is the ultimate source and provider. Through His design, He created the sun, the earth, seeds, water, and the natural processes that allow food to grow, develop, and reach our hands. Every bite we take is ultimately from His provision, and recognizing this is an act of worship that leads to the forgiveness of minor sins.

How Allah Provides:

  • The sun nourishes plants and sustains life
  • The earth produces grains, fruits, and vegetables
  • Rain and water cycles feed crops and animals
  • Livestock and fisheries provide meat and dairy
  • Seeds grow into food through natural processes

What We Learn:

  • Gratitude connects us to our Creator and reminds us of our dependence on Him.
  • Acknowledging Allah’s provision transforms ordinary acts, like eating, into acts of worship.
  • It cultivates humility, as we recognize that our strength or effort alone cannot create sustenance.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 16:114
So eat of the lawful and good things that Allah has provided for you, and be grateful for the favor of Allah, if it is Him you worship.

📖Quran 7:57
And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy until, when they have carried heavy rainclouds, We drive them to a dead land and send down rain therein, and with it We bring forth all kinds of fruits. Thus will We bring forth the dead; perhaps you may be reminded.

📖Quran 14:32
It is Allah who created the heavens and the earth and sent down rain from the sky; with it We produce fruits as provision for you. And He subjected for you the ships to sail through the sea by His command. And He subjected for you the rivers.

📖Quran 16:10
He sends down water from the sky, and with it We bring forth fruits of various kinds. Thus Allah brings forth the growth of crops.

Humans plant seeds, but their growth happens automatically through systems Allah created – like sunlight, rain, soil nutrients, and the natural processes of germination. The sun and moon follow their orbits, rivers flow, and seasons change – all according to Allah’s design. It’s like a self-operating system or a database that runs on its own rules. We use the system, but the system itself is His creation, so all credit goes to Him.

📖Quran 56:60
Did you then think that We created you uselessly and that you would not be returned to Us?
