Kindness to Hostile Visitors

📖 Sahih al-Bukhari 6927
Narrated by Aisha (RA): A group of Jews asked permission to visit the Prophet (ﷺ), and when they entered, they said, “As-Sāmu ‘Alaika” (Death be upon you). Hearing this, I (Aisha) responded, “But death and the curse of Allah be upon you!” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “O Aisha! Indeed, Allah is kind and lenient, and He loves kindness and gentleness in all matters.” I said, “Haven’t you heard what they said?” The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, “I have already responded by saying, ‘Wa ‘Alaikum’ (And upon you).”

🔹 Explanation & Lessons from the Hadith

This hadith highlights the Prophet’s patience, wisdom, and commitment to responding to hostility with dignity and kindness. Despite facing disrespect, he did not engage in anger or insults; instead, he maintained composure and responded with fairness.

1️⃣ The Prophet’s (ﷺ) Mercy & Self-Control

  • The Jews twisted the greeting “As-Salāmu ‘Alaikum” (Peace be upon you) into “As-Sāmu ‘Alaikum” (Death be upon you).
  • Aisha (RA), out of love for the Prophet, reacted with anger, but the Prophet (ﷺ) corrected her, showing that Islam encourages calmness, patience, and good manners even in the face of hostility.

📖Surah Al-Furqan (25:63)
“And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth humbly, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they respond with words of peace.”

🔹 This verse reinforces the hadith, emphasizing that true believers respond to hostility with peace and dignity rather than retaliation.

2️⃣ Kindness is More Powerful Than Anger

The Prophet (ﷺ) reminded Aisha (RA) that Allah loves gentleness. Responding with patience and calmness can have a greater impact than retaliation.

📖Surah Aal-e-Imran (3:159)
“And it was by the mercy of Allah that you were gentle with them. And if you had been rude or harsh-hearted, they would have turned away from you.”

🔹 This verse demonstrates that kindness softens hearts, whereas harshness pushes people away.

3️⃣ Islam Encourages Justice, Not Blind Retaliation

The Prophet (ﷺ) did not ignore the insult but also did not curse in return. Instead, he replied with “Wa ‘Alaikum” (And upon you), meaning that whatever they wished upon him would return to them.

📖Surah Al-Isra (17:53)
“And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan sows discord among them. Surely, Satan is an open enemy to mankind.”

🔹 This verse teaches that choosing the best words in difficult situations prevents unnecessary conflicts.

4️⃣ The True Meaning of “Peace Be Upon You”

The Islamic greeting “As-Salāmu ‘Alaikum” (السلام عليكم) means much more than just “peace be upon you.” It carries a deep meaning of:
Wishing safety and security for the other person.
Praying for their well-being and protection.
Invoking Allah’s blessings upon them.

📖Surah An-Nisa (4:86)
“And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet in return with one better than it or [at least] return it [in the same manner]. Indeed, Allah takes account of everything.”

🔹 This verse reinforces the Prophet’s practice—he neither ignored the insult nor overreacted, but responded justly and calmly.

Hadith About Not Initiating Greetings

📖Sahih Muslim 2167
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Do not initiate the greeting of peace (Salām) to the Jews and the Christians. If you meet any of them on the road, force them to its narrowest part.”

🔹 Understanding the Context of This Hadith

This hadith was given in a specific historical context—during a time when certain Jewish and Christian groups in Madinah were hostile toward Muslims.

1️⃣ War and Political Tensions:

  • The Prophet (ﷺ) had treaties with various Jewish and Christian tribes. Some groups violated these agreements and aligned with enemies of Islam.

  • This ruling was for hostile non-Muslims, not all Jews and Christians.

  • The Jews of Banu Qurayza and other tribes had conspired against the Muslims, leading to conflicts.

2️⃣ Not About Everyday Interactions:

  • This hadith does not apply to peaceful Jews and Christians.

  • Islam teaches respect and fairness towards non-Muslims who are not hostile.

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) Himself Greeted Both Muslims and Jews

📖Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2702
🔹 Anas (RA) reported: “The Prophet (ﷺ) passed by a gathering that included both Muslims and Jews, and he greeted them with peace (Salām).”

✅ This shows that greeting non-Muslims is not forbidden.
✅ The restriction in Sahih Muslim 2167 applies only to those who were openly hostile toward Muslims.
✅ The Prophet (ﷺ) greeted Jews who were not involved in war against Muslims.

🔹 Why Is It Forbidden to Greet Hostile Non-Muslims?

📖Sahih Muslim 2167
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Do not greet the Jews and Christians first. If you meet any of them on the road, force them to the narrowest part.”

🔹 This ruling was specific to hostile Jews and Christians.

✅ It is forbidden to greet those who are openly hostile towards Muslims.
✅ As seen in other hadiths, some Jews in Madinah used to mock Muslims by saying ‘As-Sāmu ‘Alaikum’ (Death be upon you) instead of ‘As-Salāmu ‘Alaikum’ (Peace be upon you).
✅ Greeting such people could lead to further insults and provoke violence.

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 6927
Narrated Aisha (RA): A group of Jews asked permission to visit the Prophet (ﷺ), and when they were admitted, they said, ‘As-Samu Alaika’ (Death be upon you). I said (to them), ‘But death and the curse of Allah be upon you!’ The Prophet (ﷺ) said, ‘O `Aisha! Allah is kind and lenient and likes that one should be kind and lenient in all matters.’”

🔹 Lesson from this Hadith:
✅ The Jews of Madinah who were hostile used greetings as a way to insult Muslims.
✅ The Prophet (ﷺ) instructed to respond only with “Wa Alaikum” (And upon you), avoiding escalation.
✅ If Muslims were to greet hostile groups first, they might use the same insult again, increasing hostility and violence.

📖Surah Al-Mumtahanah (60:8-9)
“Allah does not forbid you from being kind and just to those who have not fought you because of religion or expelled you from your homes. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.”

🔹 This confirms that the restriction does not apply to peaceful non-Muslims, only to those who are hostile.

✅ Can Muslims greet non-Muslims? → Yes, when there is no hostility.
✅ Did the Prophet (ﷺ) greet non-Muslims? → Yes, in Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2702.
✅ Why is it forbidden to greet hostile non-Muslims? → Because they might insult Islam (Sahih al-Bukhari 6927).
✅ Does the restriction apply to peaceful Jews and Christians? → No, as the Qur’an allows kindness (Surah 60:8).
