Cleanliness, Gratitude, and Good Deeds
📖Sahih Muslim 223
Narrated by Abu Malik al-Ash’ari (RA): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Cleanliness is half of faith, and ‘Alhamdulillah’ (all praise and gratitude is for Allah alone) fills the scale. And ‘SubhanAllah’ (Glory be to Allah) and ‘Alhamdulillah’ fill up what is between the heavens and the earth. Prayer is a light, charity is proof (of one’s faith), and patience is brightness. The Holy Qur’an is either a proof for you or against you. Every person starts his day and sells himself, thereby either setting himself free or destroying himself.”
🔹 Explanation & Lessons from the Hadith
This hadith is a comprehensive summary of essential Islamic teachings, linking faith to cleanliness, remembrance of Allah, prayer, charity, patience, and the impact of one’s daily actions.
1️⃣ Cleanliness is Half of Faith
Islam places great importance on both physical and spiritual purity. Cleanliness is not just about hygiene but also about purifying the heart from sins and bad intentions.
📖Surah Al-Baqarah (2:222)
“Indeed, Allah loves those who repent and loves those who purify themselves.”
🔹 This verse reinforces the hadith, showing that cleanliness is not just a requirement but something Allah loves.
2️⃣ The Power of Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah)
The Prophet (ﷺ) highlights the immense rewards of simple phrases like:
- ‘Alhamdulillah’ – Fills the scale of good deeds.
- ‘SubhanAllah’ and ‘Alhamdulillah’ – Their reward fills what is between the heavens and the earth.
📖Surah Al-Ahzab (33:41-42)
“O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance and glorify Him morning and evening.”
🔹 This verse emphasizes the importance of constantly remembering Allah, as it elevates a believer’s status.
3️⃣ Prayer is a Light
The Prophet (ﷺ) describes prayer as a light, meaning it:
✅ Illuminates a believer’s path in life and the Hereafter.
✅ Brings peace and guidance to those who establish it.
✅ Leads to ultimate success in both worlds.
📖Surah Al-Baqarah (2:45)
“Seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humble.”
🔹 This verse shows that prayer strengthens believers, helping them in life’s challenges.
4️⃣ Charity is Proof of Faith
The Prophet (ﷺ) describes charity (sadaqah) as proof, meaning:
✅ It demonstrates sincerity in faith.
✅ It purifies wealth and the soul.
✅ It serves as a sign of true belief in the Hereafter.
📖Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261)
“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed of grain that sprouts seven ears, and in every ear there are a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [the reward] for whom He wills.”
🔹 This verse shows that charity brings exponential rewards and blessings.
5️⃣ Patience is a Brightness
Patience (sabr) is described as a source of brightness, meaning:
✅ It strengthens the soul.
✅ It helps a believer endure hardships.
✅ It leads to success in this life and the next.
📖Surah Az-Zumar (39:10)
“Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without measure.”
🔹 This verse confirms that patience is among the highest virtues in Islam.
6️⃣ The Qur’an is a Proof For or Against You
The Prophet (ﷺ) warns that the Qur’an will either support or condemn a person on the Day of Judgment, based on:
✅ Whether they followed its teachings.
✅ Whether they ignored or opposed it.
📖Surah Al-Isra (17:9)
“Indeed, this Qur’an guides to that which is most upright and gives good news to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward.”
🔹 This verse shows that the Qur’an is the ultimate guidance and following it ensures success.
7️⃣ Every Person “Sells” Himself Daily
The hadith ends with a powerful reminder:
- Each day, a person either earns salvation through good deeds or destruction through sins.
- Life is a daily test, and choices determine one’s final outcome.
📖Surah Ash-Shams (91:9-10)
“He has succeeded who purifies his soul, and he has failed who corrupts it.”
🔹 This verse reinforces that success depends on one’s daily actions and self-discipline.
✅ Keep yourself clean – It is part of faith and earns Allah’s love.
✅ Remember Allah often – Simple words like ‘Alhamdulillah’ and ‘SubhanAllah’ carry immense rewards.
✅ Establish prayer – It brings light and peace in life.
✅ Give charity – It proves sincerity in faith.
✅ Be patient – It is a source of strength and blessings.
✅ Follow the Qur’an – It will either be your advocate or your witness on Judgment Day.
✅ Make wise choices daily – Every action determines whether you are freeing or destroying yourself.
This hadith and the Qur’anic context emphasize that faith is not just belief but is reflected in daily actions. Islam teaches that a true believer is clean, grateful, prayerful, charitable, patient, and guided by the Qur’an. The key message is that each day is an opportunity to make choices that lead to success or failure—so be mindful of how you “sell yourself” every morning.
