Deeds Leading to Paradise
📖Sahih Muslim 1028
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Who among you has woken up today fasting?” Abu Bakr said, “I have.” The Prophet said, “Who among you has followed a funeral procession?” Abu Bakr said, “I have.” The Prophet said, “Who among you has fed a needy person?” Abu Bakr said, “I have.” The Prophet said, “Who among you has visited a sick person?” Abu Bakr said, “I have.” The Prophet said, “These deeds are not combined in someone but that they will enter Paradise.”
Explanation
This hadith highlights four key deeds:
- Fasting
- Following a funeral procession
- Feeding a needy person
- Visiting the sick
- Doing these deeds sincerely can lead a person to Paradise.
- Even if a person struggles with prayer initially, performing these acts with sincerity aligns their heart with goodness, which often naturally leads to prayer.
- The hadith does not mean one can do all these deeds and then commit other evils freely. The key is sincere effort and avoidance of major sins.
- Someone striving to avoid wrongdoing and performing these deeds is demonstrating true faith and obedience.
Important nuance:
- Prayer is a separate command and must be done out of love for Allah and glorifying Him.
- A person who does good deeds but rejects prayer due to arrogance or laziness may not automatically enter Paradise, as sincerity and obedience are essential.
- The hadith emphasizes the power and importance of these acts as part of a faithful life, not a blanket guarantee if other sins are committed deliberately.
Quranic Context
📖Quran 2:177
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is in one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, and the Prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; and establishes prayer and gives zakah; those who fulfill their promise when they promise; and those who are patient in poverty, hardship, and during battle. These are the ones who have been truthful, and it is they who will be successful.
📖Quran 76:8-9
And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive,
[Saying], “We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.”
📖Quran 3:92
Never will you attain righteousness until you spend [in the way of Allah] from that which you love. And whatever you spend — indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.
Lesson for Today:
- Acts of kindness, charity, patience, and caring for others are pathways to Paradise when done sincerely.
- These deeds cultivate a heart inclined toward obedience, humility, and service to Allah.
- While prayer and other obligations are essential, the combination of these good deeds demonstrates a life striving for Allah’s pleasure.
