Good Character and Righteousness
📖Sahih Muslim 2553a
Narrated by Nawwas bin Sam’an al-Ansari (RA): I asked Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) about virtue (al-birr) and vice (al-ithm). He said: “Virtue is a good character (kind disposition), and vice is what troubles your heart and what you dislike others to find out about.”
🔹 Explanation & Lessons from the Hadith
This hadith provides a simple yet powerful definition of virtue (birr) and vice (ithm), emphasizing that true goodness is reflected in one’s character, while sin is something that disturbs the heart.
1️⃣ Virtue (Al-Birr) – Good Character & Morality
The Prophet (ﷺ) defines virtue as having a kind and noble character. This means:
✅ Being honest and truthful – Integrity in speech and actions.
✅ Treating others with kindness – Compassion, generosity, and fairness.
✅ Fulfilling obligations – Upholding justice and avoiding harm.
The Prophet (ﷺ) emphasized that true righteousness is not just in rituals but in good behavior.
📖Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177)
“Righteousness is not in turning your faces toward the east or the west, but true righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, and the Prophets, and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; and [who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; those who fulfill their promise when they promise; and those who are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is they who are the righteous.”
🔹 This verse reinforces the hadith, showing that true virtue is not just in worship but in faith, generosity, honesty, and patience.
2️⃣ Vice (Al-Ithm) – The Weight on the Heart
The Prophet (ﷺ) defines sin as something that disturbs the heart and what one does not want others to know about. This means:
❌ Acts of deception and dishonesty – Lying, cheating, and harming others.
❌ Sins committed in secrecy – Actions done in private that a person is ashamed to reveal.
❌ Moral discomfort – When one feels uneasy or guilty after an action, it is often a sign of wrongdoing.
📖Surah Al-Shams (91:7-10)
“And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it, and inspired it [with discernment] of its wickedness and its righteousness, He has succeeded who purifies it, and he has failed who corrupts it.”
🔹 This verse highlights that Allah has placed an inner sense of right and wrong in every soul, just as the hadith describes how sins cause discomfort in the heart.
✅ True virtue lies in good character and sincerity.
✅ Sin is what disturbs the conscience and is done in secrecy.
✅ Listen to your inner moral compass—if something feels wrong, it likely is.
✅ Righteousness is not just worship but includes kindness, charity, and patience.
This hadith and the supporting Qur’anic verses emphasize that goodness is defined by kindness and integrity, while sin is what troubles the heart and brings shame. The best way to distinguish between right and wrong is to reflect on one’s inner feelings and strive for righteousness in both actions and character.
