Prophetic Supplication on Allah’s Self-Praise
📖Sahih Muslim 486
A’isha reported: One night I missed Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) from the bed, and when I searched for him, my hand touched the soles of his feet while he was in the state of prostration. His feet were raised, and he was saying: “O Allah, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your anger, and in Your forgiveness from Your punishment. I seek refuge in You from You. I cannot praise You as You deserve; You are as You have praised Yourself.”
🔹 Explanation & Lessons from the Hadith
This hadith narrated by Aisha (RA) highlights the deep devotion of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his humility in worship. The Prophet (ﷺ) sought refuge in Allah’s pleasure from His anger, showing that a believer should always strive to earn Allah’s love and mercy rather than face His displeasure.
🔹 Understanding Allah’s “Anger” (غضب) in Islam
In human terms, anger is an emotional reaction driven by frustration, ego, or loss of control. However, Allah’s anger is not like human anger. It is not based on emotions or weaknesses but is a reflection of His divine justice and displeasure towards those who knowingly reject the truth and persist in wrongdoing.
1️⃣ What Does Allah’s “Anger” Mean?
🔸 It is a consequence of persistent disobedience – When people knowingly reject guidance after receiving the truth.
🔸 It is not a flaw but an expression of divine justice – It is His rightful rejection of oppression, disbelief, and corruption.
🔸 It does not affect Allah – Unlike human anger, which causes stress and emotional distress, Allah’s anger is purely an attribute of His divine will, not a weakness.
📖Surah Al-Fatihah (1:7)
“Not the path of those who have earned Your anger, nor of those who have gone astray.”
This verse refers to those who knew the truth but deliberately opposed it, earning Allah’s displeasure.
2️⃣ Anger in Relation to Disobedience
Allah’s anger is not an uncontrolled emotional reaction. Instead, it refers to His decree of punishment for those who rebel against His laws and refuse to repent.
📖Surah Al-A’raf (7:152)
“Indeed, those who took the calf (for worship) will be afflicted with the wrath of their Lord and humiliation in this worldly life. Thus do We recompense the inventors (of falsehood).”
This shows that Allah’s anger results from people choosing to reject the truth, engage in shirk (polytheism), and disobey divine guidance.
🔹 Seeking Refuge in Allah’s Mercy
The Prophet (ﷺ) demonstrates that the best way to protect oneself from Allah’s anger is through seeking His pleasure and forgiveness.
📖Surah Az-Zumar (39:53)
“Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.”
This shows that Allah’s mercy is greater than His anger, and any sinner who sincerely repents can be forgiven.
🔹 The Humility of the Prophet (ﷺ) in Worship
The Prophet (ﷺ) acknowledges that no human being can fully praise or glorify Allah as He deserves.
📖Surah Al-Kahf (18:109)
“Say, If the sea were ink for the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord are exhausted, even if We brought the like of it as a supplement.”
This emphasizes that Allah’s greatness is beyond human comprehension.
✅ Understand Allah’s anger – It is not like human anger but a sign of divine displeasure against persistent disobedience.
✅ Seek Allah’s mercy – Never think sins are unforgivable; Allah’s mercy is always greater than His punishment.
✅ Recognize Allah’s greatness – True faith includes accepting that we can never fully comprehend or praise Allah’s majesty.
✅ Be humble in worship – Follow the Prophet’s (ﷺ) example by sincerely seeking refuge in Allah’s forgiveness and pleasure.
This hadith teaches that Allah’s anger is not an emotional outburst but a response to persistent disobedience. The Prophet (ﷺ) demonstrated that the best protection from Allah’s anger is sincere repentance, devotion, and seeking His mercy. True believers should always strive to earn Allah’s pleasure rather than face the consequences of rejecting His guidance.
