Allah Rewards Kindness Over Harshness

📖Sunan Ibn Mājah 3688
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah is Gentle and loves gentleness, and He grants reward for it that He does not grant for harshness.

Understanding Allah’s Gentleness

This hadith emphasizes that gentleness is a cherished attribute in Islam. Allah’s gentleness reflects His wisdom, justice, and mercy. While nothing resembles Allah, describing Him as gentle signifies that He acts with consideration, wisdom, and mercy toward His creation. Gentleness is not weakness; it is a deliberate, powerful choice to guide, reward, and correct without unnecessary severity.

Addressing the Question: If Allah is Gentle, Why Do Animals Harm Each Other?

Some might question, “If Allah is gentle, why do animals harm each other or why do children suffer?” It’s important to understand that:

  • Allah’s wisdom encompasses all creation: What may seem harsh to us is part of a divine plan that we might not fully comprehend.
  • Natural processes vs human perception: Animals operate by instinct and do not have awareness of divine testing. Humans, however, experience trials consciously, which tests their patience, morality, and reliance on Allah.
  • Analogy: Imagine you create an AI robot and leave it running. If something goes wrong, the robot doesn’t truly “know” or feel like humans do; it’s just fulfilling its programming. Similarly, animals may suffer or act instinctively, but for Allah, their experience is part of His design. Humans, being conscious and accountable, experience these events as tests – much like being aware of the robot’s actions would affect a human observer.

The Fate of Animals on the Day of Judgment

  • Animals will be resurrected to settle injustices: On the Day of Judgment, all creatures, including animals, will be resurrected to settle disputes, as narrated:
    📖Quran 6:38:
“There is no creature on earth nor a bird that flies with its wings except they are communities like yourselves. We have not neglected anything in the Book. Then to their Lord they will be gathered.”
This confirms that all beings are part of Allah’s plan and accountability.

What We Learn:

  • Speaking politely to others
  • Correcting mistakes with advice, not humiliation
  • Showing patience with children, the elderly, or students
  • Resolving disputes with fairness
  • Treating animals and nature kindly

Qur’anic Context – Allah’s Gentleness

📖Quran 3:159:
So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were gentle with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you.”

📖Quran 16:90:
Indeed, Allah commands justice, good conduct, and liberality to kith and kin; He forbids all shameful deeds, injustice, and rebellion; He instructs you, that ye may receive admonition.

📖Quran 6:54:
When those come to you who believe in Our verses, say: ‘Peace be upon you. Your Lord has prescribed mercy upon Himself.

📖Quran 4:135
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives…
This verse emphasizes that believers must uphold justice impartially, even when it involves personal interests or loved ones.

📖Quran 49:9
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make peace between them. But if one of them transgresses against the other, then fight against the transgressing group until it returns to the command of Allah. And if it returns, then make peace between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse underscores that Allah loves those who act justly, especially in resolving conflicts among believers.

📖Quran 60:8
Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes – from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.”
This verse indicates that Allah loves those who act justly, even towards those who do not share the same faith.

📖Quran 16:90
Indeed, Allah orders justice, the doing of good, and liberality to kith and kin; and He forbids all shameful deeds, injustice, and rebellion. He instructs you that you may take heed.

What Harshness Means

  • Anger without reason
  • Oppression or cruelty
  • Hasty or hurtful speech
  • Ignoring others’ needs or feelings
  • Acting arrogantly or unjustly

Allah’s gentleness is about wisdom, justice, and mercy. Trials and hardships do not contradict His gentleness; they are part of His testing, teaching, and balance in creation. Humans perceive suffering differently than animals because of conscious experience, which serves as a test. The world is temporary, and true justice will be administered in the Hereafter. Animals, while they experience life instinctively, are also part of His record, and everything is ultimately registered and rewarded.

Allah’s Justice and Reward in the Hereafter

Allah commands justice, gentleness, and good conduct in this world. While some may not see the fruits of their deeds here, Allah has promised that ultimate justice and reward will be given in the Hereafter. This life is temporary, and patience and obedience to Allah are key.

📖Quran 11:115
And be patient, [O Muhammad], and your patience is not but through Allah. And do not grieve over them and do not be in distress over what they conspire.
Patience is required when justice is delayed in this world.

📖Quran 16:61
“And if Allah were to impose blame upon the people for what they have earned, He would not leave upon the earth any creature, but He defers them for a specified term. And when their term has come, they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it].
Allah allows time for trials; He has full knowledge of when to give justice.

📖Quran 39:70
And every soul will be fully compensated [for] what it did; and He is most knowing of what they do.
Each deed, good or bad, will be fully accounted for in the Hereafter.

📖Quran 57:18
“Indeed, those who spend in charity will be richly rewarded, and whatever good they put forward for themselves — they will find it with Allah.

Life in this world is temporary; reward or injustice here is not final.
Allah commands justice, gentleness, and good conduct; patience is required when the world seems unfair.
On the Day of Judgment, every deed will be fully compensated, and no injustice will remain.

📖Quran 3:185
Every soul will taste death, and you will only be fully recompensed on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.

📖Quran 57:20
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children — like the example of rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment or forgiveness from Allah and approval. And the life of this world is not but a fleeting enjoyment.”

📖Quran 29:64
“And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter — that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.
