The Virtue of Financial Kindness

📖Sahih Muslim 1561
Abu Mas’ud (Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah’s Messenger (ï·º) said: A man from a previous nation was brought before Allah on the Day of Judgment, and no good deed was found in his record except that he was a wealthy man who used to lend money to people. He would instruct his servants to be lenient with those in difficulty and grant them time to repay. Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, said: “We have more right to this (kindness), so overlook his faults.”

Explanation:

This hadith is a powerful reminder of Allah’s mercy and the immense reward for kindness in financial dealings. Despite this man having no other recorded good deeds, his compassion toward debtors was enough for Allah to forgive his sins.

  • Wealth is a Test:
Money is not just a means of personal luxury—it is a responsibility. How a person earns, spends, and deals with others financially determines their accountability before Allah.
  • Helping the Poor is an Investment with Allah:
The Qur’an describes charity and financial leniency as a “loan” to Allah. This does not mean Allah needs wealth, but rather that supporting the needy is an act of faith and trust in Allah’s rewards.

📖Surah Al-Hadid (57:11)
“Who is it that will loan Allah a good loan so He will multiply it for him and he will have a noble reward?”

📖Surah Al-Baqarah (2:245)
“Who is it that will loan Allah a good loan, which Allah will multiply many times over for him? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned.”

  • This verse does not imply that Allah is in need, rather, it signifies that spending in charity is an act that will be greatly rewarded.
  • Supporting the poor, funding mosques, and contributing to beneficial projects are all included in this principle.
  • Forgiveness in Financial Matters Leads to Divine Mercy:
Just as this man forgave the debts of others, Allah forgave his sins. This shows that acts of mercy towards people can lead to Allah’s mercy upon us.

This hadith and its supporting Qur’anic verses emphasize the importance of financial ethics in Islam. Whether through charity, forgiving debts, or assisting the needy, Allah multiplies the reward and grants immense mercy to those who show kindness in their financial dealings.
