Kind Treatment of Neighbors
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 6014
Narrated `Aisha: The Prophet (ï·º) said: “Gabriel continued to recommend me about treating the neighbors kindly and politely so much so that I thought he would order me to make them as my heirs.”
This hadith emphasizes the great importance of neighborly kindness in Islam. The repeated instructions from Gabriel (Jibril عليه السلام) show that caring for neighbors is not just encouraged but a significant moral duty in Islam. The Prophet (ﷺ) was so frequently reminded about this matter that he thought neighbors might even receive inheritance rights, indicating how deeply Islam values community care, In Islam, neighbors are to be treated with respect, kindness, and generosity, regardless of their faith or background. A good relationship with neighbors promotes harmony, mutual support, and strong community ties.
Why Did Gabriel Emphasize Neighborly Kindness?
Gabriel is the angel closest to Allah, entrusted with delivering divine commands, guidance, and wisdom. His repeated reminders to the Prophet (ï·º) indicate that neighborly kindness is not just social etiquette but a divine obligation.
📖Surah An-Najm (53:5-6)
“He (Gabriel) has been taught by one mighty in power, possessing great strength, and he stood firm.”
This verse highlights that Gabriel has been given authority by Allah and delivers His guidance as instructed. His role as a divine messenger includes advising and reinforcing moral teachings, such as kindness toward neighbors.
📖Surah Al-Baqarah (2:97)
“Say: Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel—it is he who has brought it (the revelation) down upon your heart, [O Muhammad], by permission of Allah, confirming what was before it and as guidance and good tidings for the believers.”
This verse directly confirms that Gabriel brings divine revelation and guidance, showing why he repeatedly instructed the Prophet (ï·º) on neighborly kindness.
📖Surah At-Takwir (81:19-21)
“Indeed, this is the word of a noble messenger (Gabriel), (19) Possessing great strength, established in the presence of the Owner of the Throne, (20) Obeyed there (in the heavens) and trustworthy.” (21)
This verse describes Gabriel as a powerful and trustworthy messenger who conveys Allah’s message with full authority
Additionally, the Qur’an itself commands believers to treat neighbors with excellence:
📖 Surah An-Nisa (4:36)
“Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and be good to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the distant neighbor, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are arrogant and boastful.”
This verse reinforces that neighborly kindness is a divine duty, and Gabriel’s repeated reminders further emphasize its importance, making it a key value in Islam.
