Supplicating for the Deceased

📖Sunan Abī Dāwūd 3199
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “When you have prayed over your deceased, offer a sincere supplication for him.”

Description:
This hadith teaches us that after performing the funeral prayer (Ṣalāt al-Janāzah), Muslims should make a heartfelt du‘ā for the deceased. Prayer over the dead is not only a farewell but also a means of asking Allah to forgive, have mercy, and grant them peace in the Hereafter.

Why we should do this & its benefits:

  • Our du‘ā can intercede on behalf of the deceased.
  • It brings comfort to the soul of the dead.
  • It reflects love, mercy, and brotherhood in the Muslim community.
  • It benefits us too, as every prayer we make for others invites Allah’s mercy upon us.
  • Death reminds us of our own return to Allah, so praying for the deceased softens our hearts and increases faith.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 59:10
And those who came after them say, “Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and put not in our hearts any resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.”
(Allah encourages us to pray for forgiveness for those who came before us.)

📖Quran 14:41
Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established.
(Shows how asking forgiveness for others is part of faith.)
