Paradise for patience with lost loved ones
📖Sunan al-Nasā’ī 1871
Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said,
“Verily, Allah is not satisfied for His believing servant to be rewarded with anything but Paradise if his loved ones on earth pass away, he remains patient, hopes for reward, and says what he has been commanded.”
Description:
This hadith emphasizes Allah’s mercy and the great reward awaiting a believer who faces the loss of loved ones with patience and steadfast faith. The phrase “says what he has been commanded” means the believer responds not only by reciting “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji‘un” (“Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return”), but also by following the Prophet’s ﷺ broader teachings: to remain patient, continue doing good deeds, avoid despair or blame, and maintain hope in Allah’s mercy and reward. This holistic response – combining words, actions, and attitude – is what pleases Allah and guarantees Paradise for the believer.
What we learn from it today:
In times of loss and hardship, simply being patient is not enough; we are instructed to actively practice what the Prophet ﷺ commanded: verbal submission through remembrance of Allah’s decree, maintaining good conduct, and nurturing hope for Allah’s reward. This means resisting negativity, continuing to do righteous deeds, and keeping trust in Allah’s plan. These actions strengthen our resilience and bring us closer to Paradise, reminding us that true faith transforms suffering into an opportunity for spiritual elevation.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 39:10
Say, “O My servants who have believed, fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world is good, and the earth of Allah is spacious. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account.
📖Quran 2:156
Those who say, when afflicted with a calamity, ‘We belong to God and to Him we shall return.’
This verse teaches that when believers face calamity or loss, their natural and faithful response is to acknowledge that everything ultimately belongs to God and that all will return to Him. This statement expresses submission, acceptance, and trust in God’s divine wisdom and plan. It reminds believers to maintain patience and composure in hardship, knowing that life and death are part of God’s greater design and that returning to Him is the ultimate reality. This declaration strengthens the heart and provides comfort amid trials.
