Choose Your Friends Wisely
📖Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2378
Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ï·º) said: “A man is upon the religion of his friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends.”
Explanation
This hadith emphasizes the influence of companionship on a person’s beliefs, values, and character. The phrase “A man is upon the religion of his friend” does not necessarily mean that one will adopt the exact faith of their friend, but rather that one’s morals, behavior, and way of thinking will be shaped by the company they keep.
🔹 Friendships Should Be Based on Morality and Good Conduct – The hadith is not restricting friendships only to Muslims but is emphasizing the moral and ethical influence of friends. Associating with those who uphold righteousness, honesty, and good values benefits one’s own character.
🔹 Warning Against Harmful Friendships – The hadith warns against befriending those who engage in immoral actions, promote wrongdoing, or pressure others to abandon their values. However, it does not prohibit friendships with people of different beliefs as long as they do not lead one away from the truth.
🔹 No Force or Oppression – This hadith does not imply that people of different faiths or backgrounds cannot interact, but it warns against relationships that may pressure or force someone to abandon their home, faith, or values. The focus is on maintaining friendships that align with ethical and moral teachings.
Qur’anic Context
📖Surah Al-Mumtahanah (60:8)
“Allah does not forbid you from dealing kindly and justly with those who have not fought you because of religion and have not expelled you from your homes. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.”
➤ This verse clarifies that Muslims are allowed to have friendly and just relations with non-Muslims as long as they do not engage in hostility or oppression. This aligns with the hadith, which advises caution in friendships but does not prohibit relationships with good-hearted people.
📖Surah Al-Kahf (18:28)
“And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance. And do not turn your eyes away from them, desiring the adornments of worldly life.”
➤ This verse advises believers to associate with those who are sincere and righteous, reinforcing the hadith’s guidance on choosing good companions.
This hadith does not prohibit friendships with non-Muslims but warns against close companionships that could negatively impact faith and morality. It emphasizes the importance of surrounding oneself with people who uphold good character rather than those who lead others toward corruption. The Qur’an further clarifies that as long as others do not fight against Islam or oppress believers, Muslims are encouraged to maintain just and kind relationships with them.
