Importance of Friday Rituals

📖Sahih Muslim 846b
Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Sa’id al-Khudri reported on the authority of his father that the Messenger of Allah (ï·º) said: “Bathing on Friday is obligatory for every adult, along with using Miswak and applying some perfume if available. As for perfume, it may be that which is used by a lady.”

Explanation

This hadith highlights the etiquette of Friday (Jumu’ah) prayers, emphasizing cleanliness, personal hygiene, and self-care as essential aspects of Islam.

🔹 Obligation of Bathing on Friday – Bathing before attending the Jumu’ah prayer is a strongly emphasized Sunnah, ensuring that Muslims present themselves in a clean and dignified manner before Allah and fellow believers.

🔹 Using the Miswak – The Miswak (a natural toothbrush) is recommended for oral hygiene, reinforcing the importance of cleanliness in Islam.

🔹 Applying Perfume – Using fragrance enhances personal presentation and ensures a pleasant environment in congregational prayers. The Prophet (ﷺ) even mentioned that perfume used by women (if mild and not excessive) may be applied, showing Islam’s encouragement of good grooming.

Qur’anic Context

📖Surah Al-A’raf (7:31)
“O children of Adam, take your adornment at every place of prayer, and eat and drink, but do not be excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess.”
➤ This verse commands believers to dress well and maintain cleanliness when going for prayer, aligning perfectly with the hadith’s instructions on bathing, Miswak, and perfume for Jumu’ah.

📖Surah Al-Muddathir (74:4-5)
“And purify your clothing, and shun filth.”
➤ This verse reinforces the importance of cleanliness, both physically and spiritually, which the hadith promotes through Friday bathing and self-care.

This hadith, supported by Qur’anic verses, teaches that hygiene, cleanliness, and self-care are integral parts of Islamic practice. Preparing for Jumu’ah with proper grooming is not just a personal habit but an act of worship, promoting discipline, community harmony, and reverence for Allah.
