Mindful Eating and Cleanliness

📖Sahih Muslim 2034
Anas reported that when Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) ate food, he licked his three fingers. He said:
“When any one of you drops a mouthful, he should remove anything filthy from it and then eat it, and should not leave it for Satan. He also commanded us to wipe the dish, saying: ‘You do not know in what portion of your food the blessing lies.’”

Lessons from This Hadith

1️⃣ Avoiding Wastefulness:

  • The Prophet (ﷺ) emphasized that food should not be wasted. Even if a piece of food falls, it should be cleaned and eaten instead of being discarded unnecessarily.

2️⃣ Blessings in Food:

  • There is unseen barakah (blessing) in food, and one cannot be sure in which portion the blessing lies. This teaches gratitude and humility towards the provisions given by Allah.

3️⃣ Satan Represents Bad Behavior, Not a Physical Being:

  • The reference to Satan in this hadith does not mean a physical entity taking the food, but rather symbolizes bad actions like wastefulness and ingratitude.

  • This is similar to Jesus calling Peter “Satan” in the Bible:

    📖 Matthew 16:23
“Jesus turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.’”

  • Jesus did not mean Peter was literally Satan, but that his words and actions were misguiding.

  • Likewise, in the hadith, leaving food to be wasted is described as a “Satanic” action, meaning it is wrong and undesirable.

Qur’anic Context for This Hadith

📖Surah Al-A’raf (7:31)
“O Children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but do not be excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess.”

🔹 This verse supports the hadith by commanding moderation in eating and avoiding wastefulness.

📖Surah Al-Isra (17:27)
“Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and Satan is ever ungrateful to his Lord.”

🔹 This verse further connects wastefulness with bad behavior, reinforcing the hadith’s message.
