Protect Yourself When Tribulations Arise
📖Sunan Abī Dāwūd 4343
Abdullah ibn Amr reported: We were gathered around the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while he mentioned tribulations, saying, “If you see that people have disordered their commitments, diminished their trusts, and are as jumbled as this,” and he interlaced his fingers. I stood to come near him and I said, “How should I act if that happens?” The Prophet said, “Stay in your house, control your tongue, accept what you know is good, reject what you know is evil, take care of your affairs specifically and abandon the affairs of the common people.”
Description:
This Hadith guides believers on how to respond when society falls into disorder and corruption. The Prophet ﷺ highlights three signs of societal decay:
- Disordered commitments – people fail to fulfill promises, agreements, or responsibilities.
- Diminished trusts – entrusted duties or rights are neglected or betrayed.
- General chaos – society becomes jumbled, confused, and morally unstable.
The advice given is practical: instead of engaging in widespread chaos, focus on personal responsibility. Control your tongue, act upon what is good, reject evil you can recognize, and prioritize your own affairs rather than trying to fix the entire society. This preserves personal faith and integrity amid widespread corruption.
Examples of disordered commitments and diminished trusts:
- Breaking contracts or promises
- Failing to protect others’ rights
- Spreading false information or rumors
- Mismanaging communal resources
- Ignoring moral and ethical obligations
What We Learn Today:
- Focus on personal righteousness even when society is corrupt
- Avoid participating in harmful speech or actions
- Prioritize personal responsibilities and ethics
- Maintain integrity and justice in your own life
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 4:58
Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which Allah instructs you. Indeed, Allah is ever Hearing and Seeing.
📖Quran 33:70-71
O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
📖Quran 23:8
And they who are faithfully true to their trusts and their covenants.
📖Quran 3:186
You will surely be tested in your possessions and yourselves, and you will hear from those who received the Scripture before you and from the disbelievers much abuse. But if you are patient and fear Allah – indeed, that is of the matters [worthy] of determination.
These verses reinforce the Hadith’s guidance: when others fail to fulfill commitments or act unjustly, the believer should remain upright, focus on their own duties, and uphold integrity, trusting Allah for ultimate justice.
