Good Speech, Hidden Corruption

📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2405
Ibn Umar reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah Almighty said: I have created My creatures with tongues as sweet as honey and hearts as bitter as aloes. I swear by Myself, I will surely decree a tribulation for them that will leave even the forbearing among them deranged. Do they try to delude Me or conspire against Me?”

Description

This hadith highlights the hypocrisy and double-faced nature of people: they speak with tongues that are sweet like honey, showing kindness, courtesy, or even piety outwardly – but their hearts are bitter like aloes, filled with deceit, hatred, arrogance, or betrayal. Allah warns that He will send trials so severe that even the most patient and wise among people will be shaken. The hadith exposes the danger of living with two faces – one for people and another hidden from Allah.

Why Allah decrees tribulation

Allah decrees such tribulations to:

  1. Expose hypocrisy – to separate sincere believers from those who only pretend with sweet words.
  2. Purify faith – trials cleanse the heart from diseases and reveal true loyalty to Allah.
  3. Test patience and sincerity – to see who remains firm in worship despite hardship.

Thus, when tribulation comes, it strips away false appearances, leaving only the reality of a person’s heart.

Quranic Context

📖Quran 2:204
And among mankind is he whose speech about worldly life amazes you, and he calls Allah to witness what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents.
Beautiful words on the tongue, but a heart of hostility.

📖Quran 63:4
When you see them, their appearance impresses you. And if they speak, you listen to their words. They are like pieces of wood propped up. They think every shout is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded?
Sweet talk and appearance, but hollow inside.

📖Quran 3:154
…Allah wanted to test what was in your hearts and purify what was in your breasts. And Allah is Knowing of what is within the hearts.
They said words of loyalty, but their hearts held betrayal.

  • As we see it today
Politicians speak about justice, peace, and unity, yet their hearts pursue power and corruption.
  • Influencers and celebrities talk about kindness and morals, but behind the scenes promote immorality.
  • Ordinary people may greet with smiles and sweet words but carry jealousy, hate, or arrogance inside.

This proves the hadith’s truth: Allah created mankind with the potential for such contradiction – sweet tongues but bitter hearts – to test sincerity, So the meaning is: it is part of Allah’s creation that humans can speak sweetly but hide bitterness inside. That is why Allah decrees trials – to expose what is hidden.

Why did Allah create them like this?

The question naturally comes: Why would Allah create humans with this ability to hide sweetness in speech but bitterness in heart?

The answer: Without this contrast, there would be no real test.

  • If humans only had pure hearts, no one could choose evil, and there would be no trial of sincerity.
  • If they only had bitter hearts, no one could choose good, and mercy would be meaningless.
  • Allah created humans with both capacities – knowing good and evil – so that they must choose knowingly which path to follow.

Thus, the “sweet tongue and bitter heart” is part of the test: will a person match their words with sincerity, or will they use words to deceive while their heart hides corruption?
