The Unrepayable Debt of a Child to His Father in Islam

📖Sahih Muslim 1510a
Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: “A son does not repay what he owes his father unless he buys him (the father) in case he is a slave and then emancipates him.”

Explanation of the Hadith

🔹 The Unpayable Debt to One’s Father
This hadith highlights the immense rights of a father and how a child can never fully repay what their father has done for them.

  • A father provides guidance, protection, and sustenance for his children.

  • No matter what a child does, they cannot fully compensate for their father’s sacrifices.

  • The only situation where a child comes close to repaying their father is if the father were enslaved, and the child freed him—a rare and extreme case.

🔹 Islamic Obligation to Honor and Obey Parents
In Islam, showing kindness, respect, and obedience to parents is one of the greatest virtues.

📖Surah Al-Isra 17:23
“And your Lord has decreed that you do not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age with you, do not say to them ‘Uff’ (a word of disrespect), and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.”

Even saying “Uff” (a minor sign of frustration) to parents is forbidden—showing how much respect Islam demands for them.

📖Surah Luqman 31:14
“And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.”

Gratitude to Allah is directly linked to gratitude towards parents.

🔹 How to Honor One’s Father in Islam
Since a child can never truly repay their father, the best way to honor him is by:

  1. Obeying and respecting him in all lawful matters.

  2. Praying for him during and after his life.

  3. Helping him financially and emotionally when needed.

  4. Fulfilling his wishes (as long as they align with Islam).

  5. Maintaining family ties even after his passing.

📖Surah Al-Ahqaf 46:15
“My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to do righteousness of which You will approve. And make my offspring righteous. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.”

Making dua for one’s parents is among the greatest acts of kindness in Islam.
