📖Sahih al-Bukhari 1379, Sahih Muslim 2866
Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Verily, when one of you dies, he is shown his place morning and evening. If he is among the inhabitants of Paradise, then he is among the inhabitants of Paradise. If he is among the inhabitants of the Hellfire, then he is among the inhabitants of the Hellfire. It will be said: This is your place until you are raised on the Day of Resurrection.”
Meaning:
The Prophet ﷺ made it clear that the soul of every person, after death, is shown its final destination twice a day — morning and evening. This “morning and evening” refers to the same periods of time that we experience in this world, not some different timeline of the Hereafter. Just as day and night continue in this world, the deceased is made aware of his fate during those same cycles until the Day of Judgment.
Most people will face suffering in the grave itself – punishment or comfort depending on their deeds. However, some souls are already placed in the Hellfire before the final Day of Judgment. Allah mentions Pharaoh and his followers as an example:
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 40:46
The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening. And on the Day the Hour will be established [it will be said], “Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment.”
Here Allah confirms that Pharaoh and his soldiers are already being shown the Fire morning and evening – before the actual Day of Resurrection.
📖Quran 23:99-100
[For such is the state of the disbelievers]—until, when death comes to one of them, he says, “My Lord, send me back, that I might do righteousness in that which I left behind.” No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.
This verse shows that after death, there is no return to the world. Instead, souls remain in the state of barzakh (the life of the grave) until resurrection.
📖Quran 36:52
They will say, “Woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place?” [It will be said], “This is what the Most Merciful had promised, and the messengers told the truth.”
This indicates that the grave is not a place of permanent sleep, but a waiting station where souls are either in comfort or punishment until the final raising.
So the hadith and Qur’an together explain:
- Morning and evening are the same time cycles we know in this world.
- Every soul is shown its destination daily until Judgment Day.
- The majority face punishment or ease in the grave, while some — like Pharaoh — are already in direct exposure to Hellfire.
Hadith on Grave Punishment:
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 1374
Narrated Asma’ bint Abi Bakr: The Prophet ﷺ stood up and said, “You will be tested in your graves. The trial will be like the trial of the Antichrist. It will be said, ‘What do you know about this man (Muhammad ﷺ)?’ The believer will say, ‘He is Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah. He came to us with clear proofs and guidance, and we believed in him and followed him.’ Then it will be said to him, ‘Sleep in peace, for we have known that you were a believer.’ But the hypocrite or the disbeliever will say, ‘I do not know. I only said what the people said.’ It will be said, ‘You neither knew nor followed those who knew.’ Then he will be struck with an iron hammer between his ears, and he will scream, and that scream will be heard by everything around him except humans and jinn.
This shows:
- Non-believers and hypocrites fail the questioning in the grave.
- They are punished immediately, struck with iron hammers.
- Their cries are heard by all creation except humans and jinn.
The Prophet ﷺ also described the punishment of the grave in other hadith, such as the grave tightening until the ribs interlock (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 1071). However, scholars explain that this stage is still related to the soul and its connection to the body, not the full resurrection body. The complete bodily punishment and reward will only occur after resurrection when all are raised again.
