The Prophet’s Sunnah breaking his fast

📖Jami` at-Tirmidhi 720
Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever is overcome by vomiting, then he is not required to make up (the fast), and whoever vomits on purpose, then he must make it up.”

Explanation of the Hadith

🔹 Unintentional Vomiting Does Not Require Making Up the Fast

  • If someone vomits involuntarily due to illness, nausea, or weakness, their fast is not broken.

  • The Prophet (ﷺ) clarified that such a person is not required to make up the fast, meaning the fast remains valid.

  • This shows that Islam recognizes human weakness and does not place an unnecessary burden on believers.

📖Surah Al-Baqarah 2:286
“Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned.”

Since involuntary vomiting is beyond one’s control, it is excused—there is no penalty or requirement to make up the fast.

🔹 Deliberate Vomiting Requires Making Up the Fast

  • If a person forces themselves to vomit (by inserting fingers in the throat, using substances, etc.), their fast is broken.

  • In this case, they must make up for that day by fasting another day after Ramadan.

  • The reason is that fasting requires self-control, and deliberately inducing vomiting contradicts the essence of fasting.

📖Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185
“Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship, and [wants] for you to complete the period (of fasting) and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.”

Islam provides ease in genuine hardships but also maintains the discipline of fasting.

🔹 Breaking the Fast for Necessary Reasons
There are situations where a person must break their fast, and Islam permits this out of mercy:

  1. Severe illness – If fasting worsens health or delays recovery.

  2. Extreme thirst or hunger – If it threatens life or causes harm.

  3. Pregnancy or breastfeeding – If fasting affects the mother or child.

  4. Traveling – If it is difficult to fast while on a journey.

  5. Menstruation or postnatal bleeding – Women are commanded not to fast during this time.

📖Surah Al-Baqarah 2:184
“But if any of you is ill or on a journey, the same number (of days) should be made up from other days…”

Islam allows breaking the fast when necessary, but those who are able must make up the missed fasts later.
