Learning Lineage to Strengthen Relationships
📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 1979
Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Learn your lineages to solidify your family ties. Verily, keeping family ties causes love among the kinship, enriches the wealth, and increases the lifespan.”
This hadith emphasizes that learning one’s lineage is not for pride, tribal superiority, or glorification, but simply to recognize and remember family – who is your father, mother, grandparents, and relatives. This remembrance strengthens bonds, keeps love alive in families, and fulfills the duty of kinship ties (silat al-rahm) which Islam greatly values, By maintaining kinship ties, Allah can bless a person’s wealth and even extend their lifespan. This does not change Allah’s eternal decree (Qadr), but rather it is written in the records of the angels – if someone maintains family ties, Allah allows them blessings and a longer life in that “angelic record.” The Prophet ﷺ explained that while Allah’s eternal decree never changes, the angels record conditions based on one’s actions, such as keeping family ties or cutting them.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 4:1
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed, Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.
📖Quran 47:22-23
So would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your ties of kinship? Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed, so He deafened them and blinded their vision.
📖Quran 16:97
Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while being a believer — We will surely give them a good life, and We will surely reward them according to the best of what they used to do.
