Kindness to Non-Muslim
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 5978
Narrated Asma’ bint Abu Bakr: “My mother came to me, hoping (for my favor) during the lifetime of the Prophet (ﷺ). I asked the Prophet, ‘May I treat her kindly?’ He replied, ‘Yes.'”
📖Surah Al-Mumtahanah 60:8
“Allah does not forbid you from being kind and just to those who have not fought you because of religion or driven you out of your homes. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.”
Explanation & Lessons from the Hadith
1️⃣ Kindness and Justice in Relationships
🔹 This hadith teaches that Islam encourages kindness and justice towards non-Muslims, including family members, as long as they are not hostile towards you.
🔹 Asma’s mother was a non-Muslim, yet the Prophet (ﷺ) instructed her to treat her kindly.
2️⃣ Kindness Has Limits—It Does Not Mean Enduring Evil
🔹 Islam commands kindness, but not at the cost of dignity or justice.
🔹 Kindness does not mean tolerating oppression, disrespect, or harm from anyone—whether Muslim or non-Muslim.
3️⃣ If You Are Wronged, You Can Respond Accordingly
📖Surah Ash-Shura 42:40
“The recompense for an injury is an injury equal thereto (in degree), but if a person forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is due from Allah…”
🔹 Islam allows fair retaliation—you can respond to mistreatment in the same way.
🔹 However, forgiving is better when it leads to reconciliation.
📖Surah An-Nahl 16:126
“And if you punish (your enemy, O believers), then punish with an equivalent of that with which you were harmed. But if you are patient, it is better for those who are patient.”
🔹 Justice is allowed—you don’t have to tolerate injustice in the name of kindness.
🔹 But patience and restraint are rewarded even more.
4️⃣ Distinguishing Between Good and Evil People
📖Surah Al-Mumtahanah 60:9
“Allah only forbids you from taking allies those who have fought you because of religion, and expelled you from your homes, and aided in your expulsion. And whoever takes them as allies, then it is they who are the wrongdoers.”
🔹 Islam differentiates between peaceful and hostile non-Muslims.
🔹 You should show kindness to peaceful people, but those who harm you do not deserve trust, friendship, or favors.
