Keeping Ties to Benefit Deceased Parents

📖Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān 432
Abdullah ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever would like to maintain relations with his father in his grave, let him maintain relations with his father’s brothers after him.”

This hadith emphasizes the importance of maintaining family ties. Maintaining good relations with one’s relatives – especially the father’s brothers and extended family – brings blessings that can benefit the deceased even after their death, as a form of ongoing charity and mercy.

How a person can maintain relations “in the grave”:

  • By visiting relatives, helping them, and keeping ties strong.
  • By speaking kindly, giving gifts, or supporting them in times of need.
  • By praying for the deceased, as good deeds and prayers for relatives can reach them.
  • Maintaining family ties strengthens love, unity, and remembrance, which Allah rewards both in this life and the next.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 4:36
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful.
(This emphasizes kindness and maintaining relationships with family and others.)

📖Quran 16:90
Indeed, Allah commands justice, good conduct, and giving to relatives, and forbids immorality, bad conduct, and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
(This shows that maintaining family relations is part of good conduct rewarded by Allah.)

Lessons Today:

  • Maintaining ties with extended family honors both the living and deceased.
  • Acts of kindness and support towards relatives can bring spiritual benefit to deceased parents.
  • Family ties are a source of mercy, unity, and guidance in society.
