Major Sins and Their Impact on Faith in Islam
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 2475
Narrated Abu Huraira (May Allah be pleased with him):
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:“When an adulterer commits illegal sexual intercourse, then he is not a believer at the time he is doing it, and when a drinker of alcoholic liquor drinks it, then he is not a believer at the time of drinking it, and when a thief steals, then he is not a believer at the time of stealing, and when a robber robs, and the people look at him, then he is not a believer at the time of doing robbery.”
Understanding the Hadith Correctly
This hadith does not mean that a person can commit sins freely and then just repent afterward to regain faith. Islam does not permit such an attitude of deliberate sinning followed by planned repentance.
1️⃣Faith and Sin Cannot Coexist at the Same Moment
The hadith states that when a believer commits a major sin, their Iman (faith) is at its weakest. This means that at that moment, they are acting against the teachings of Islam. However, it does not mean they have left Islam completely.
📖Surah Al-Mutaffifin 83:14
“Nay! But on their hearts is the stain of the (evil) which they used to earn.”
🔹 This means that repeated sins darken the heart and distance a person from faith.
2️⃣True Repentance Requires Sincere Regret
Islam rejects the idea of deliberately sinning while thinking, “I will just ask for forgiveness later.” If someone sins with this mindset, they are mocking Allah’s mercy, and their repentance may not be accepted.
📖Surah An-Nisa 4:17-18
“Allah accepts only the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and foolishness and repent soon after. It is they to whom Allah will forgive… But repentance is not accepted from those who continue to do evil deeds until death comes to one of them and he says, ‘Now I repent’…”
🔹 This proves that real repentance must come from genuine regret and a commitment to avoid sin in the future—not as a backup plan.
3️⃣Planned Sinning and Fake Repentance Are Dangerous
If a person sins with the mindset that they can just repent later, their repentance is not sincere and may not be accepted. The Prophet (ﷺ) warned about this attitude:
📖Surah Al-Furqan 25:23
“And We will turn to whatever deeds they did, and We will make them like scattered dust.”
🔹 This verse applies to both Muslims and non-Muslims. It highlights that deeds done without sincerity or while knowingly committing sins in private will be rendered worthless in the sight of Allah. True righteousness requires sincerity, obedience, and avoiding hypocrisy.
📖Sunan Ibn Majah 4245
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “I certainly know people of my nation who will come on the Day of Resurrection with good deeds like the mountains of Tihamah, but Allah will make them like scattered dust.”Thawban (RA) asked: “O Messenger of Allah, describe them to us and tell us more, so that we will not become of them unknowingly.” The Prophet (ﷺ) replied:
“They are your brothers and from your race, worshipping at night as you do, but they will be people who, when they are alone, transgress the sacred limits of Allah.”
🔹 This hadith refers to those who appear righteous in public but knowingly commit sins in private, assuming they will be forgiven simply because they believe and seek forgiveness. However, true faith requires sincerity, and repeatedly violating Allah’s limits while believing one is safe from consequences is a form of deception.
🔹 This hadith warns against using repentance as an excuse to sin.
4️⃣ Sins Have Consequences Even After Repentance
Even if Allah forgives a person’s sin after sincere repentance, some sins still have worldly consequences. For example:
-
A thief may have to return stolen goods.
-
A liar may lose people’s trust.
-
A person who commits zina may face social consequences.
📖Surah Ash-Shura 42:30
“Whatever affliction befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much.”
🔹 This means that sins bring negative effects, even if Allah forgives them.
✅ This hadith does not encourage sin—it warns that sin weakens faith.
✅ Real repentance means deep regret, not a planned backup for sinning.
✅ If a person sins while thinking they can just repent later, their repentance may not be accepted.
✅ Sins have consequences, even after seeking forgiveness.
