Maintaining Family Relations
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 6138
Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him uphold his family ties.”
This hadith teaches that true belief is not only about prayer and rituals but also about how you treat your relatives. Upholding family ties (silat al-rahm) means maintaining connection, kindness, and support even if relatives are difficult or neglectful. Breaking ties leads to Allah’s anger, while maintaining them is a sign of strong faith.
How to uphold family ties:
- Visit or call relatives regularly, even if briefly.
- Offer help in times of need- financial, emotional, or physical.
- Forgive their mistakes and overlook small disputes.
- Pray for them in their absence.
- Be patient if they cut ties, and still try to reconnect.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 4:1
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.
Family ties are sacred because they come from the womb (rahm), directly connected to Allah’s Name Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful).
📖Quran 16:90
Indeed, Allah commands justice, good conduct, and giving to relatives and forbids immorality, bad conduct, and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
📖Quran 47:22-23
So would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your ties of kinship? Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed, so He deafened them and blinded their vision.
Maintaining family ties is a form of worship and proof of faith. It preserves unity, spreads mercy, and brings Allah’s blessings in this life and the next.
