Description:
This hadith captures a fundamental principle of true faith: loving others sincerely, especially fellow believers (brothers), as well as neighbors, as one loves oneself. It highlights that genuine faith is not complete until a person sincerely desires for others the same goodness, happiness, and well-being they want for themselves. The term “brother” here primarily refers to fellow Muslims, but the inclusion of “neighbor” broadens the scope to include non-Muslims living around us, emphasizing kindness and goodwill beyond the boundaries of faith.
Loving oneself means valuing one’s health, safety, dignity, and happiness. By extension, this hadith calls for empathy, compassion, and active concern for others, regardless of religious differences, reflecting the social harmony Islam encourages.
What we learn from it today:
- True faith requires empathy and sincere goodwill toward others, both Muslims and non-Muslims.
- We should treat neighbors and communities with kindness and respect, just as we care for ourselves.
- Loving others includes wishing and working for their well-being, safety, and happiness.
- This principle promotes social peace, understanding, and mutual respect in diverse societies.
- It challenges selfishness and encourages altruism and justice in everyday interactions.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 49:10
The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.
📖Quran 4:36
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful.
📖Quran 60:8
Allah does not forbid you from being righteous and just toward those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This hadith, together with the Quranic verses, establishes that sincere faith is expressed through love and justice toward others – Muslim or non-Muslim – reflecting the deep ethical foundation of Islam.
