Islam and the People of the Book
📖Sahih Muslim 153
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (ï·º) said:
“By Him in Whose hand is the life of Muhammad, he who amongst the community of Jews or Christians hears about me, but does not affirm his belief in that with which I have been sent and dies in this state (of disbelief), he shall be but one of the denizens of Hell-Fire.”
This Hadith emphasizes the necessity of accepting the message of Islam once it has been properly conveyed and understood. It highlights that those who hear about Prophet Muhammad (ï·º) and knowingly reject him after recognizing the truth will be held accountable in the Hereafter.
Context and Clarification
This Hadith does not mean that every Jew or Christian is automatically condemned. Instead, it applies only to those who receive the message of Islam, understand it, and still reject it knowingly.
📖Surah Al-Isra 17:15
“And We do not punish until We have sent a messenger.”
🔹 Allah’s justice ensures that no one is punished without receiving guidance. Those who have never truly heard or understood Islam will not be held accountable for rejecting something they were unaware of.
📖Surah Fussilat 41:40
“Those who distort Our signs are not hidden from Us. So, is the one who is cast into the Fire better, or the one who comes secure on the Day of Resurrection? Do whatever you will; indeed, He is All-Seeing of what you do.”
🔹 This verse indicates that those who deliberately reject clear guidance are choosing their own fate. On the Day of Judgment, they will not be able to claim ignorance, as they knowingly turned away from the truth.
Choosing Hell Through Rejection
Islam teaches that belief is a conscious decision. If a person sees the truth, recognizes it, and still rejects it, they are making a choice that leads them to Hell.
📖Surah Al-A’raf 7:179
“They have hearts with which they do not understand, eyes with which they do not see, and ears with which they do not hear. They are like cattle—rather, they are even more astray. It is they who are the heedless.”
This means that those who reject Islam despite having knowledge of its truth are responsible for their own destiny. Allah does not unjustly punish anyone, He only holds accountable those who knowingly turn away from His guidance. On the Day of Resurrection, such people cannot claim ignorance because they read, understood, and still chose to reject the truth. They knew the consequences, yet turned away by their own will. Allah does not force anyone into Hell—they choose their own fate by rejecting His guidance.
