Signs When a Society Fails to Uphold Good

📖Sunan Ibn Mājah 4015
Anas ibn Malik reported: It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, when should we give up enjoining good and forbidding evil?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When there appears among you the same as the nations which came before you.” We said, “O Messenger of Allah, what appeared among the nations before us?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Kingship among your youths, obscenity among your elders, and knowledge among your most vile.

Description:
The hadith warns that a society reaches moral decay when:

  1. Leadership falls into the hands of inexperienced youth – decisions are made without wisdom.
  2. Elders indulge in obscenity or immorality – the moral compass of the community is corrupted.
  3. Knowledge is controlled by the corrupt or vile – religious and worldly knowledge is misused.

When these conditions appear, promoting good and forbidding evil becomes challenging.

Historical Precedents:
The Prophet ﷺ referenced earlier nations that fell into ruin due to similar patterns:

Jews and Christians – corrupt leaders and misuse of knowledge led to moral decay. They engaged in:

  • Promoting nudity and immodesty
  • Pornography-like behaviors in social practices
  • Adultery and fornication
  • Blasphemy and distortion of divine messages

Zoroastrians – elites distorted truth, causing societal decline. They practiced:

  • Excessive indulgence in sensual pleasures
  • Immoral rituals and obscenity
  • Corruption in knowledge and worship

Hindus and Buddhists – rigid hierarchies and immoral rulers caused decay. They experienced:

  • Sexual immorality and adultery
  • Worshipping false idols with obscene practices
  • Societal permissiveness toward lust and vice

These examples show that when leadership, morality, and knowledge are misused, societies fall into widespread corruption, including nudity, pornography, adultery, and blasphemy, leading to eventual ruin.

Modern Parallels:
Today, we can observe similar trends:

  • Young leaders making rash decisions – ignoring wisdom, law, and accountability.
  • Elderly or influential figures promoting immoral or obscene behaviors – openly supporting pornography, adultery, nudity, and blasphemy.
  • Scholars or knowledge holders misleading people for power or profit – twisting religion or secular knowledge to justify immorality or social corruption.
  • Societal support for vice – immoral behavior is normalized and even celebrated in media, education, and politics, making corruption widespread and accepted.

This shows that the patterns of moral decay the Prophet ﷺ warned about are present in today’s societies. Leadership, elders, and knowledge holders all play a role in promoting and sustaining vice, just as historical nations did.
