Collective punishment for failure to stop evil

📖Sunan Abī Dāwūd 4339
The Prophet (ï·º) said: If any man is among a people in whose midst he does acts of disobedience, and, though they are able to make him change (his acts), they do not change, Allah will smite them with punishment before they die.”

Description:

This hadith warns that when a community tolerates open disobedience and sinful acts – despite having the power to stop them – and fails to do so, Allah’s punishment can descend on the entire group before individuals die. It emphasizes the collective responsibility to oppose injustice and immorality.

Examples of Disobedience:

  • Acts of injustice such as murder, oppression, and corruption.
  • Immoral behavior like adultery, fornication, and spreading vice.
  • Allowing others to continue sinful acts such as watching pornography or planning to commit adultery without advising or stopping them.

Communities must uphold righteousness and justice by discouraging and preventing evil.

Justice and Forbidding Evil:

“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both…”
— Commands standing firm for justice at all times.

📖Quran 5:2
“And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression…”
— Emphasizes collective responsibility to cooperate in good, not in evil.

📖Quran 3:110
“You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong…”
— Muslims are commanded to promote good and prevent wrongdoing.

📖Quran 7:56
“And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation…”
— Prohibits spreading corruption and injustice.
