The Prophet supplicated thrice
đSÌŁahÌŁiÌhÌŁ Muslim 1794
Ibn Masâud reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when he would supplicate, he would supplicate three times, and when he would ask Allah, he would ask three times.
Ibn Masâud reported that the Messenger of Allah ï·ș, when making supplication, would repeat it three times. Similarly, when asking Allah for something, he would ask three times. This demonstrates the emphasis on persistence, sincerity, and concentration in dua, reflecting respect and seriousness when turning to Allah. Repeating the supplication ensures the heart remains focused and humble before the Creator.
- Persistence in prayer: We should not give up after one attempt but ask sincerely and repeatedly.
- Sincerity and focus: Repeating a dua encourages mindfulness and avoids careless or routine supplication.
- Respect and humility: Repetition shows recognition of Allahâs greatness and our dependence on Him.
- Structured approach: Using a small, consistent number of repetitions (like three) helps develop discipline and reflection in our worship.
Quranic Context:
While the Qurâan does not explicitly say ârepeat three times,â it emphasizes asking Allah with humility and persistence:
đQuran 2:186
And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me that they may be guided.
đQuran 40:60
And your Lord says, âCall upon Me; I will respond to you.â Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell abased.
đQuran 59:7
And whatsoever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain from it; and fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
