The Prophet asks Allah for light in his heart
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 6316, Sahih Muslim 763
Ibn Abbas reported: He spent the night with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he woke up. The Prophet cleansed his teeth, performed ablution, the call to prayer was announced, and he went out for the prayer while he was saying, “O Allah, place light in my heart and light on my tongue. Place light in my hearing and light in my seeing. Place light behind me and light in front of me. Place light above me and light below me. O Allah, grant me light!”
Best Description
This hadith shows the intimate moments of the Prophet ﷺ preparing for prayer. Even in the quiet hours of the night, he was deeply connected to Allah, seeking not worldly things, but light. This “light” is not physical brightness but divine guidance that penetrates every part of life – heart, speech, vision, hearing, and actions.
What “Light” Means
In Islam, light (nūr) represents:
- Faith (Iman): The clarity of belief that removes doubts.
- Guidance (Hidayah): The path that leads to Allah’s pleasure.
- Purity: Cleansing the heart from hypocrisy, arrogance, and sins.
- Protection: Light acts as a shield against the darkness of disbelief and evil whispers.
When the Prophet ﷺ asked for light in every direction – front, back, above, below – it meant he wanted his entire existence surrounded by Allah’s guidance and mercy.
Quranic Context
📖Quran 24:35
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp; the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly white star lit from a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things.
When Allah says He is “the Light of the heavens and the earth,” it does not mean physical light like the sun or fire. Rather, it means:
- Guidance (Hidāyah): Allah provides the path of truth, clarity, and salvation to His servants. Without His light, mankind would remain in the darkness of disbelief and confusion.
- Holiness and Purity: His light refers to His perfect purity, far removed from any defect or weakness. Just as light is pure and unstained, Allah is free of all imperfection.
- Knowledge and Wisdom: Light is the symbol of knowledge. Allah’s knowledge illuminates the heavens and earth, exposing what is hidden and guiding mankind to truth.
- Faith in the Heart: The “lamp in a niche” represents the believer’s heart filled with faith, shining brightly because of Allah’s light. The glass being like a shining star shows that this faith becomes beautiful, pure, and unbreakable.
- The Blessed Olive Tree: Neither eastern nor western — meaning its light is universal, not restricted to any tribe, race, or region. Islam is a guidance for all humanity.
- Light upon Light: This means layers of guidance – the light of revelation, added to the light of faith, added to the light of righteous deeds, all building upon each other.
- Divine Control: Allah gives this light to whom He wills. Some hearts accept it and shine brightly, others remain hardened in darkness.
📖Quran 14:1
Alif, Lam, Ra. [This is] a Book which We have revealed to you so you may bring mankind out of darkness into light — by permission of their Lord — to the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy.
📖Quran 5:15-16
There has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book. By which Allah guides those who pursue His pleasure to the ways of peace and brings them out from darkness into light, by His permission, and guides them to a straight path.
- And for the believers, the Qur’an becomes the light, which was brought by the Light – meaning Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He was chosen by Allah, and Allah also confirms in Quran 5:15-16 that the Prophet is a light, meaning Allah made him a source of guidance, a path that leads to Him, along with the Qur’an.
📖Quran 57:9
It is He who sends down upon His servant verses of clear evidence that He may bring you out from darkness into light. And indeed, Allah is to you Kind and Merciful.
📖Quran 57:28
O you who have believed, fear Allah and believe in His Messenger; He will give you a double portion of His mercy and make for you a light by which you will walk and forgive you. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
📖Quran 39:22
So is one whose breast Allah has expanded to accept Islam and he is upon a light from his Lord [like one who is hard-hearted]? Then woe to those whose hearts are hardened against the remembrance of Allah.
