Supplication for safety from harmful trials
📖Sunan Abī Dāwūd 1552
Abu al-Yasar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to supplicate,
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from being crushed under rubble. I seek refuge in You from falling into an abyss. I seek refuge in You from drowning, burning, and senility. I seek refuge in You from Satan striking me at the time of death. I seek refuge in You from dying in Your path while retreating. I seek refuge in You from dying by a poisonous sting.”
Explanation:
- Crushed under rubble – This is a real danger in war, earthquakes, or disasters. But spiritually, it can also mean being crushed under worldly burdens and sins. If one seeks refuge in Allah, he is reminded that nothing is heavier than Allah’s commands, so he avoids disbelief.
- Falling into an abyss – Literally means falling into a pit or destruction. Spiritually, it represents falling into doubt, sin, or misguidance. Seeking refuge makes a person alert to Shayṭān’s traps, keeping him safe from falling into disbelief.
- Drowning – Literally water drowning, but also drowning in desires, wealth, or worldly distractions. Seeking refuge in Allah reminds a person to hold firm to His commands, not to be consumed by worldly temptations.
- Burning – Literally fire accidents, but also a reminder of Hellfire. Seeking refuge keeps the person obedient to Allah, so he is saved from both worldly fire and the eternal Fire.
- Senility (old age weakness) – Literally losing memory or strength. Spiritually, it represents being neglected or forgotten by family, or losing one’s practice of faith. If a person seeks refuge, he remembers Allah’s commands even if people neglect him, protecting his faith until death.
- Satan striking at the time of death – Literally Shayṭān tries hardest at death to mislead. This could be through family harming, ignoring, or pressuring the dying person – making them forget Allah. But by seeking refuge, the heart stays attached to Allah, protected from disbelief in the final moment.
- Dying while retreating from battle – Literally a shameful death, running from Allah’s path. Spiritually, it means abandoning truth out of fear of people. Seeking refuge makes one firm, reminding that obedience to Allah is above fear of creation.
- Dying by poisonous sting – Literally by venom, but also represents sudden harms from hidden enemies. Spiritually, it could be sins that slowly poison the soul. Seeking refuge protects a person by making him aware of sins and staying on Allah’s straight path.
How Seeking Refuge Protects:
- Seeking refuge is not just words; it is remembrance of Allah that pulls a person back to His commands.
- By remembering Allah, one sees dangers not only in the physical world but also in hidden traps of Shayṭān.
- Refuge strengthens the heart: a person may be weak physically (like old age, neglect, harm by others), but spiritually he remains strong, not falling into disbelief.
- Ultimately, refuge ensures that no matter how he dies, his heart is safe with Allah.
