Protection from Satan upon entering the mosque

📖Sunan Abī Dāwūd 466
Abdullah ibn Amr reported: When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, entered the mosque, he would say, “I seek refuge in Allah Almighty, in His noble countenance, and in His everlasting authority from the accursed Satan.

This hadith shows that the Prophet ﷺ would begin by seeking Allah’s protection upon entering the mosque. It does not mean that Iblīs himself enters the mosque, but rather that Iblīs whispers into human hearts, and people may act on his behalf through anger, hatred, or corruption. By seeking refuge, the Prophet ﷺ was remembering Allah’s command, asking Allah to guard him and the believers from evil intentions. If someone were to enter the mosque with bad intentions, that intention is from Satan’s whispers, and the person himself becomes like a devil in action. Allah, by His protection, can stop such harm and prevent corruption in His sacred house, If someone comes into the mosque with jealousy, hatred, arrogance, or a plan to harm others, this is not their pure self – it is the whisper of Iblīs working through them. In that moment, the person becomes like a satan (human-shaytan), carrying out the devil’s will. Seeking refuge in Allah means asking Him to block such intentions, change the hearts of those people, and prevent corruption in a place meant for prayer and peace.

Examples:

  • A man may come to the mosque intending to argue or spread division. By Allah’s protection, his tongue can be restrained.
  • Someone may enter with envy against another worshipper. Allah can soften his heart so he remembers humility instead.
  • A person might want to show off in prayer for reputation. Allah can remind him that sincerity is only for Him.

Seeking refuge also means remembering Allah’s commands, which leads a believer to peace, not argument, hatred, or violence. Even if someone does wrong in the mosque, the believer should not respond with hatred or fighting, but instead remember Allah, who commands peace and reconciliation. This remembrance shields the heart from Satan’s influence.
