Even the Prophet Cannot Save Disobedient People
📖Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 4771, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 206
Abu Huraira reported: When the verse, “Warn your closest relatives,” (26:214) was revealed to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, he said: “O assembly of Quraysh! Purchase your souls from Allah, for I cannot avail you from Allah at all. O tribe of Abdul Muttalib, I cannot avail you from Allah at all. O ‘Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib, I cannot avail you from Allah at all. O Safiyyah, aunt of the Messenger of Allah, I cannot avail you from Allah at all. O Fatimah, daughter of the Messenger of Allah, ask from me whatever you wish, but I cannot avail you from Allah at all.”
Description
This hadith emphasizes the ultimate authority of Allah and the limited role of even the Prophet ﷺ. No one, including the Messenger of Allah, can intercede or protect a person from Allah’s judgment if they are in clear disobedience. The Prophet ﷺ is a guide and intercessor by Allah’s permission, but salvation and forgiveness are solely by Allah’s will.
What It Means Today
- Obedience to Allah is paramount; even the Prophet ﷺ cannot override Allah’s command for disobedient individuals.
- The Prophet ﷺ can intercede for believers on the Day of Judgment, but this is only by Allah’s permission.
- Guidance and warnings from the Prophet ﷺ are opportunities for salvation, not guarantees.
- Accountability rests entirely with Allah, and no human, regardless of status, can save someone without divine approval.
Lessons for Us
- Follow Allah’s commands sincerely; do not rely on others, even prophets, to cover disobedience.
- Respect the limits of human intercession; ultimate judgment belongs to Allah alone.
- Take the Prophet ﷺ’s teachings seriously, as they guide us toward Allah’s mercy.
- Seek Allah’s forgiveness and protection directly through obedience and worship.
