Hadith on Detachment from the World

📖Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2328
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do not take to the estate, such that you become desirous of the world.”

Description:

The Prophet ﷺ is warning believers not to become so attached to property, wealth, and worldly comfort that it leads to greed, love for dunya, and neglect of the Hereafter.

  • “Estate” here refers to land, wealth, or possessions that tie one down and fuel material desire.
  • It’s not a condemnation of owning property – but a warning against obsession, pride, and turning the world into a permanent home.
  • It’s about spiritual balance – not allowing the world to enter your heart, even if it’s in your hand.
    • The hadith doesn’t ban wealth but teaches:
Don’t be owned by what you own
Use the world, but live for the next

    • When your heart clings to dunya, you become:

      • Distracted from salah

      • Attached to status

      • Obsessed with security, power, and expansion

The Prophet ﷺ and his companions lived simple lives despite their influence – this was their way to keep focused on Allah.

What We Learn Today:

In an age of materialism, real estate obsession, luxury lifestyle, and status-driven success:

  • This hadith is a cure.
  • Buy a house, run a business – but don’t let your soul rot with greed.
  • Don’t make the temporary world your permanent goal.
  • Live like a traveler – collect good deeds, not just properties.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 57:20
Know that the life of this world is but play and amusement, adornment, boasting among yourselves, and competition in wealth and children… But the life of this world is nothing but the enjoyment of delusion.
→ The world is not evil, but deceptively temporary.

📖Quran 28:77
And seek, through what Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you…
→ Balance: Use dunya without becoming its slave.

📖Quran 3:185
Every soul will taste death. And you will only be given your full reward on the Day of Judgment. So whoever is saved from the Fire and admitted into Paradise has truly succeeded. And the life of this world is nothing but a deceiving enjoyment.
→ Real success is after death, not in land ownership.

This hadith reminds us to own the world without letting it own us. Don’t let your love for property or wealth turn you away from Allah. Use the world for good – but never trade eternity for temporary dirt.
