Refraining from Insulting the Dead

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 6516
Narrated `Aisha: The Prophet ﷺ said, “Do not abuse the dead, for they have reached the result of what they have done.”

Meaning:
This hadith prohibits insulting the dead in general – especially those whose fate is unknown or who died with some dignity. Since they’ve already returned to Allah and are facing the result of their deeds, abusing them brings no benefit and may harm the living.

Why Not Even If the Person Was a Kafir?
Even if the person was a disbeliever or a sinner, publicly insulting them after death brings no benefit. Their case is now with Allah – He will judge with absolute justice and wisdom.

Constantly insulting the dead may:

  • Hurt the feelings of their family members – whether Muslim or non-Muslim – who may be living with you peacefully.
  • Break the principles of dignity, especially in a society where peaceful coexistence is needed.
  • Lead to arrogance or self-righteousness.
  • Distract you from your own sins and accountability.

But What About Pharaoh or Abu Lahab?
When Allah Himself exposes or curses someone, like:

  • 📖Quran 111:1-3
Perish the hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he! His wealth will not benefit him, nor what he gained. He will burn in a Fire of blazing flame…

  • 📖Quran 28:38-39
Pharaoh said, “O chiefs, I know not that you have a god other than me”… So We seized him and his soldiers and cast them into the sea. So see how was the end of the wrongdoers.

These are open warnings. Their evil is recorded as an example. Speaking against such known enemies of Allah is not abuse -it’s truth. There’s no respect due to oppressors whom Allah Himself condemned.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 6:108
And do not insult those they invoke besides Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge…
— Insults may lead to more harm and backlash, so the general teaching is to be wise in speech.

📖Quran 88:25-26
Indeed, to Us is their return. Then indeed, upon Us is their account.
— Every soul faces Allah’s justice.

Don’t insult the average dead person – leave their case to Allah, But when Allah has explicitly condemned someone like Abu Lahab or Pharaoh, mentioning their evil and warning others through it is not only allowed – it’s part of the Qur’anic message.
