Children’s Wealth Belonging to the Father

📖Sunan Abī Dāwūd 3530
Abdullah ibn Amr reported: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have some property and my father invades my property.” The Prophet ﷺ replied, “You and your property belong to your father. Verily, your children are the most wholesome of your earnings, so eat from what your children earn.”

Explanation:
In Islam, a child’s wealth ultimately belongs to the father. This does not mean that the father has the right to oppress, exploit, or misuse it – rather it highlights the father’s position as guardian, provider, and caretaker. A father spends his life giving for his children, and if he is ever in need, it is only just and honorable for the child’s wealth to be accessible to him. Islam preserves balance: while the father has rights over the child’s wealth, he is also commanded to use it with fairness and not cause harm. This teaching strengthens family ties, prevents neglect of parents, and reminds children that whatever they earn is a continuation of their father’s efforts and sacrifices.

📖Quran 2:233
No person shall have a burden laid on him greater than he can bear. No mother shall be treated unfairly on account of her child, nor father on account of his child.

And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you show kindness to your parents. If one or both of them reach old age in your life, do not say to them a word of disrespect, nor scold them, but speak to them words of honor.

📖Quran 31:14
And We have enjoined upon man to care for his parents. His mother carried him, weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the final return.

They ask you what they should spend. Say, “Whatever good you spend must be for parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, and the traveler. Whatever good you do, indeed Allah is All-Knowing of it.
