Drops and Footsteps Loved by Allah
📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 1669
Abu Umamah reported: The Prophet ﷺ said, “Nothing is more beloved to Allah than two drops and two traces: a teardrop shed out of fear of Allah, and a drop of blood shed in Allah’s cause. As for the two traces: a trace resulting in Allah’s cause, and a trace resulting from one of the duties that Allah made obligatory.”
This hadith highlights four acts especially beloved to Allah:
- A teardrop shed out of fear of Allah – This represents the fear of committing sins or wrongdoing. A believer who truly fears Allah sheds tears when realizing their shortcomings or mistakes, showing sincerity, humility, and awareness of Allah’s commands. It reflects a heart striving to avoid sin and seek His pleasure.
- A drop of blood shed in Allah’s cause – This refers to suffering, struggling, or sacrificing for Allah’s cause, including defending justice, supporting the faith, or enduring persecution. The shedding of blood for Allah reflects devotion and courage in obeying Him.
- A trace resulting in Allah’s cause – Any action taken sincerely to seek Allah’s pleasure, whether in worship, spreading good, or helping others, counts as a step toward righteousness.
- A trace resulting from one of the duties that Allah made obligatory – Performing obligatory acts like prayer, fasting, charity, or pilgrimage also carries immense value; even small steps in fulfilling these obligations are rewarded by Allah.
This hadith teaches that both internal acts (fear, humility) and external acts (struggle, obedience) are deeply valued by Allah, showing a balance between heart and action in faith.
Lessons for Today
- Fear of wrongdoing motivates righteousness: Tears from fearing sin remind us to remain conscious of Allah and strive to avoid His displeasure.
- Sacrifice for Allah’s cause: Enduring hardship or effort for Allah’s sake is highly rewarded.
- Intentional action matters: Even small steps toward obligations or in the service of Allah are precious in His sight.
Example: A believer may shed tears reflecting on their mistakes, while another struggles to uphold justice or defend the faith – both actions, inward and outward, are beloved to Allah.
