Embracing Hard Work is better then Begging
Sahih Muslim 1042 a
Abu Huraira is reported to have heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying: It is better for one among you to bring a load of firewood on his back and give charity out of it (and satisfy his own need) and be independent of people, than that he should beg from people, whether they give him anything or refuse him. Verily the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin (charity) with your dependents.
The hadith Sahih Muslim 1042 a encourages self-reliance and charity, stating that it is better to work hard and give rather than beg. However, Islam also teaches kindness towards those in need.
- Surah Al-Duha (93:10-11)
“And as for the beggar, do not repel [him], And proclaim the blessings of your Lord.
This verse does not prohibit begging but commands believers not to mistreat or harshly reject those who ask for help. While the hadith encourages earning one’s own livelihood, this Qur’anic verse reminds us that those who do beg should still be treated with dignity and kindness. Thus, Islam balances self-reliance with compassion, encouraging people to work for their sustenance while also being merciful to those who are struggling.
