Whoever begs without need in Hellfire

📖Sunan al-Nasa’i 2595
Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, Whoever would be independent, Allah Almighty will make him independent. Whoever would abstain from asking people, Allah Almighty will make him abstinent. Whoever is content with sufficiency, Allah Almighty will suffice him.”

Description
This hadith teaches the virtue of self-reliance, dignity, and contentment. The Prophet ﷺ emphasizes that a person’s attitude and efforts shape the blessings they receive from Allah. If someone strives to avoid relying on others, Allah strengthens their independence. If someone refrains from asking unnecessarily, Allah helps them remain free from need. If a person is satisfied with what they have, Allah grants them inner sufficiency and peace of heart.

Why Allah Will Do It

  • Preservation of dignity: Allah honors those who guard their self-respect by avoiding unnecessary dependence on others.
  • Encouragement of trust in Him: By making independent those who try to be so, Allah nurtures tawakkul (reliance on Him).
  • Protection from humiliation: Dependence on people often leads to emotional or social humiliation, which Allah wants to save believers from.

Why Allah Does Not Want Someone to Beg

  • Begging without necessity reflects a lack of trust in Allah’s provision.
  • It can lead to greed and misuse of charity meant for the truly needy.
  • It erodes self-respect and can make a person habitual in dependency.

If They Beg, How Allah May Keep Them That Way

  • When someone turns to people instead of Allah without necessity, Allah may leave them to that choice, making them dependent on people rather than granting independence.
📖Sahih Muslim 1041
He who begs the riches of others to increase his own is asking only for live coals, so let him ask a little or much.

This hadith teaches that begging without genuine need is a sin and brings spiritual harm. The Prophet ﷺ allowed asking for help only when truly necessary – for example, when a person has no food, clothing, or means of survival. If someone refuses to work, avoids effort, and still asks others for money, they are lying about their need and damaging society. Such behavior creates a culture of dependency, leading more people to beg without cause.

Begging When Necessary

  • Only asks for help in urgent situations (hunger, shelter, essential needs).
  • Not sinful, as it is seeking survival and the community is encouraged to help.
  • Builds compassion and social support.

Begging Without Need

  • Asks despite being able to work or sustain themselves.
  • Sinful and harmful, as it is lying about need and exploiting generosity.
  • Promotes laziness, dependence, and injustice toward those truly in need.

If an entire society is suffering due to poverty, war, or disaster, Islam’s solution is not for the poor to beg from door to door. Instead, it is the duty of wealthy Muslims to step forward and solve the problem themselves through charity (zakah, sadaqah) and community support. The rich are responsible for removing the hardship before it forces people into humiliation.

Qur’an Verses in Context

📖Qur’an 2:273
“[Charity is] for the poor who are restricted for the cause of Allah, unable to move about in the land. An ignorant person would think them self-sufficient because they refrain from begging. You will know them by their mark; they do not beg people persistently…

📖Qur’an 29:62
“Allah enlarges provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts it for him. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of all things.”

📖Qur’an 65:3
“And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.

📖Qur’an 93:10
And as for the petitioner, do not repel [him].

This verse commands Muslims not to harshly reject someone who asks for help. If a person is genuinely in need, give them support with kindness. However, if you know someone is lying about their need or is capable of working but refuses, then do not encourage their laziness. Instead, guide them to earn through honest work. Islam encourages helping the truly needy, not supporting dishonesty or idleness.

📖Qur’an 2:188
And do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that you might knowingly consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin.”

Muslims are forbidden from taking anyone’s money or property in a wrongful way – whether through theft, fraud, lies, begging without need, or corrupt dealings. Wealth must be earned lawfully and with hone
