Avoid Seeking Human Praise
đSunan al-TirmidhiÌ 2755
Muâawiyah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, âWhoever is pleased to be received by men standing, let him take his seat in the Hellfire.â
Description
This hadith warns against seeking honor, praise, or recognition from people. It emphasizes that prioritizing human admiration over Allahâs pleasure is a serious spiritual flaw that can lead one to the Hellfire.
Meaning
- âReceived by men standingâ refers to enjoying worldly status, flattery, or arrogance.
- The Prophet ï·ș is teaching that humility before Allah and sincerity in worship are far more important than seeking fame or applause.
- Those who chase human approval above divine guidance risk being punished.
How it Works
- When a person constantly seeks recognition, they may compromise faith, morality, or worship just to please people.
- This becomes a form of shirk in the sense that the heart is attached to human praise rather than Allahâs pleasure.
Qurâan Verses
đQuran 2:264
O you who believe! Do not nullify your charity by reminders of your generosity or by hurtful words, like someone who spends his wealth only to be seen by people and does not believe in Allah or the Last Day. His example is like a smooth rock with soil on it⊠it yields nothing.
đQuran 107:4-7
Woe to those who pray but are heedless of their prayer,
Those who show off,
And deny the value of charity.
-
Both verses reinforce that seeking human recognition nullifies the value of good deeds.
Exception: Ignorance
-
If someone did not know that their behavior was wrong, or acted out of ignorance, Allahâs justice comes into play:
đQuran 4:17
Allah only accepts the repentance of those who do evil ignorantly or carelessly and then repent soon after. It is they to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.
-
So, the hadith applies to those who knowingly seek human praise over Allah, not to those unaware of the spiritual harm.
