The Virtue of Swallowing Anger
📖Sunan Ibn Majah 4189
It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: There is no gulp that brings greater reward with Allah than a gulp of anger that a man swallows (suppresses), seeking thereby the Face of Allah.”
Meaning:
This hadith teaches that the most rewarding self-control in the sight of Allah is when a person suppresses their anger – not because they’re weak, but out of love and fear of Allah. Controlling your anger is a powerful act of worship. Swallowing anger is harder than swallowing food or drink, but the reward is far greater.
What We Learn Today:
- Anger is a test of character. If you can control it for Allah’s sake, you’re strong in both faith and will.
- Your reaction matters. Even when someone provokes you, Allah is watching how you respond – not just what you feel.
- Suppression is strength. Islam doesn’t say you won’t feel anger, but it does say you should not act on it in harmful ways.
- Seeking the Face of Allah means doing good for the sake of His pleasure – not for ego, revenge, or show.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 3:134
Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people – and Allah loves the doers of good.
Suppressing anger is a trait of those loved by Allah.
📖Quran 41:34
Good and evil are not equal. Repel evil with that which is better; then the one you had enmity with will become as close as a devoted friend.
Controlling anger transforms relationships and hearts.
📖Quran 42:37
And those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, and when they are angry, they forgive.
Forgiveness in the moment of anger is a sign of taqwa.
Note on “Seeking the Face of Allah”:
This phrase does not mean imagining a face like humans or creation. Allah is not like anything we can imagine.
As Allah said:
📖Quran 42:11
There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
Allah created humans, angels, jinn, Satan, the moon, stars, and the entire universe – but He is unlike anything He created, When the hadith says “seeking the Face of Allah,” it means seeking His pleasure, His nearness, and His eternal reward, without imagining any physical image or form.
Summary:
Controlling your anger isn’t weakness – it’s strength for the sake of Allah. Swallow it when you’re tested, and you’ll earn the reward of someone who truly desires closeness to the One who is unlike anything in creation.
