The Prophet Prohibits Charms and Superstitions
📖Sunan Abī Dāwūd 36
“Ruwayfah ibn Thabit reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, ‘O Ruwayfah, perhaps you will live for a long time after me. Tell the people that whoever ties knots in his beard, or hangs a string around his neck, or cleans himself with dung or bones, then Muhammad has disavowed him.'”
Description:
- This hadith addresses superstitious practices and harmful customs that some people used to follow.
- Tying knots in the beard, wearing strings around the neck, or cleaning oneself with dung or bones were cultural or magical practices believed to bring luck, protection, or purification.
- The Prophet ﷺ disavowed these acts, clarifying that such superstitions have no basis in Islam.
Meaning:
- Islam rejects superstition, magic, and harmful rituals.
- True guidance comes from Allah and His Messenger, not from cultural myths or false beliefs.
What We Learn Today:
- Avoid superstition, charms, and baseless rituals.
- Trust in Allah alone for protection, guidance, and purification.
- Educate others that Islamic teachings are rational, ethical, and free of superstition.
📖Qur’an 2:102
“And they followed what the devils recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic…”
This verse directly forbids practicing magic, reinforcing that superstition has no validity in Islam.
📖Qur’an 5:90
“O you who believe, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stones, and divination by arrows are only defilement from Satan’s handiwork. So avoid it that you may be successful.”
Superstitious rituals and charms are compared to Satan’s handiwork, and believers are commanded to avoid them completely.
📖Qur’an 2:286
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reminds us that Allah provides clear guidance and limits, and we do not need useless or harmful practices to seek help or protection.
📖Qur’an 3:102
O you who believe, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims.”
Following Islam correctly means avoiding superstition and adhering to authentic teachings, ensuring our actions are pleasing to Allah.
