Follow Islam as Much as You Can
📖Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 7202, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1867
Abdullah ibn Umar reported: When we pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, on condition of listening and obeying, he said to us, “As much as you are able.”
Description
This hadith shows the practicality and ease in Islam. When pledging allegiance or following the Prophet ﷺ, one is expected to obey and follow within their capacity. It recognizes human limitations and does not demand the impossible.
- Personal Progress: A Muslim or new Muslim can follow Islam gradually, doing good deeds as much as they can.
- Avoiding Evil: If they are not able to perform all good deeds at once, they should at least avoid committing evil.
- No Excuse for Promoting Evil: Not being able to do all good does not justify promoting wrong – Islam teaches to stay away from evil even if one cannot do everything good immediately.
- Gradual Improvement: The example of the Prophet ﷺ shows that growth in faith and actions is a step-by-step process, and Allah values sincere effort.
What We Learn Today
- Islam is a religion of ease and balance; one can grow gradually in knowledge, worship, and ethics.
- Everyone is responsible to do good as much as they can, without being overwhelmed by perfectionism.
- Avoid despair if you cannot perform everything at once – small, consistent steps are rewarded.
Qur’an Verses as Context
📖Quran 2:286
“Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear…”
📖Quran 73:20
“Allah will bring ease after hardship…”
📖Quran 23:96
“Repel evil with that which is better; then the one between whom and you there was enmity will become as though he were a devoted friend.”
Do good as much as possible (repel evil with good). Avoid doing bad yourself; even if you cannot stop all harm, do not commit evil, Another supportive verse:
📖Quran 28:77
“But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not neglect your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you, and do not seek corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.”
This clearly instructs: do as much good as you can and avoid causing harm or corruption.
