Hereafter is the only life worth living
📖Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1804
It has been reported on the authority of Sahl b. Sa’d who said: The Messenger of Allah (ï·º) came to us while we were digging the ditch and were carrying the earth on our shoulders. Seeing our condition, he said: O God, there is no life but the life of the Hereafter. So forgive Thou the Muhajirs and the Ansar.”
Explanation:
This dua was made by the Prophet Muhammad ï·º during the intense and difficult time of the Battle of the Trench (Khandaq). The Muhajirs (those who emigrated from Mecca to Medina) and the Ansar (the helpers from Medina who supported them) were digging a trench around the city to defend against a confederate siege, The dua highlights the sacrifice, struggle, and perseverance of these companions, reminding them – and us – that the true life and ultimate success lie in the Hereafter, not just in this worldly existence.
Who Was Present at the Battle of the Trench?
Many of the Prophet’s closest companions stood firm during this battle, including:
- Aisha (RA): The beloved wife of the Prophet ï·º, she was in Medina during the battle, providing spiritual support and care for the community.
- Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA): Known for his bravery and leadership, Ali participated actively in the digging and defense.
- Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA): A strong leader and advisor, Umar helped organize the defense efforts.
- Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (RA): The closest companion of the Prophet ï·º, offering unwavering support and counsel.
Together, these companions exemplified faith, sacrifice, and courage in protecting Islam and the Muslim community.
Quranic Verses Honoring the Muhajirs and Ansar:
📖Quran 59:8-9
“And [also for] the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking bounty from Allah and [His] approval and supporting Allah and His Messenger, [there is also a share]. Those are the truthful, And [also for] those who were settled in the Home [i.e., Medina] and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul – it is those who will be the successful.”
📖Quran 9:100
“And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhajirs and the Ansar and those who followed them with good conduct – Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment.
