Pronouncing call to prayer in baby newborn’s ear

📖Sunan al-Tirmidhi 1514
Abu Rafi’ reported: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, pronounce the call to prayer in the ear of Hasan ibn Ali after Fatimah gave birth to him.

The Prophet ﷺ wanted the first words to reach the newborn’s ear to be Allah’s greatness and the call to prayer. This Sunnah shows that having a child is a blessing from Allah, and parents should begin by glorifying Him through the adhan.

Benefits for the child:

  1. Spiritual Protection: The adhan drives away shayṭān, who seeks to harm newborns.
  2. First Connection to Tawḥīd: Even if the baby cannot understand, the soul already recognizes Allah (Quran 7:172).
  3. Foundation of Faith & Identity: It plants the seed of Islam before any worldly sound.
  4. Parents’ Gratitude: By performing adhan, parents acknowledge the child as a gift from Allah and glorify Him immediately.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 7:172
And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants, and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], “Am I not your Lord?” They said, “Yes, we testify.” Lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, “Indeed, we were unaware of this.”

📖Quran 30:30
So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. Adhere to the fitrah of Allah upon which He has created all people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.

📖Quran 20:14
Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.

📖Quran 16:72
And Allah has made for you from yourselves mates and made for you from your mates sons and grandchildren and provided for you from the good things. Then in falsehood do they believe and in the favor of Allah they disbelieve?

📖Quran 42:49
To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He creates what He wills. He gives to whom He wills female children, and He gives to whom He wills males.

📖Quran 42:50
Or He pairs them, male and female, and He renders whom He wills barren. Indeed, He is Knowing and Competent.

So the adhan at birth is not “outdated.” It is the most natural way to glorify Allah when He blesses parents with a child — protecting the baby, honoring the fitrah, and reminding the family of their duty to raise this gift in Islam.
