Hadith of Angels Cursing the Wife Explained

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 5193
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ﷺ said: “If a man calls his wife to his bed and she refuses, and he spends the night angry with her, the angels curse her until morning.”

Explanation:

This hadith isn’t about male control – it’s about emotional discipline. If a wife refuses without a valid reason, the Prophet ﷺ taught that the husband shouldn’t act on anger, force her, or do anything sinful, Instead, Islam shifts the response to the angels, removing the husband’s ability to act unjustly.

❗️Why This Saves the Woman:

In reality, a husband may:

  • Get angry at her refusal.
  • Verbally or physically abuse her.
  • Do haram acts even with her in anger (forceful intimacy, aggression, etc.).

But Islam blocks that by saying:

  • ❌ “You don’t curse her.”
❌ “You don’t touch her in anger.”
✅ “Let the angels handle it – if she’s wrong, they will curse her.”

➡ It protects the woman from being harmed by her husband’s anger.
➡ And it protects the man from doing haram acts out of rage.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 4:19
“…And live with them honorably. If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike something, and Allah brings through it much good.”
→ Even if angry, a husband is not allowed to take matters into his own hands.

📖Quran 2:231
“Do not retain them to harm them so that you transgress. And whoever does that has wronged himself.”
→ Men are warned not to misuse their authority during anger.

📖Riyad as-Salihin 270
The Prophet ﷺ said: “O Allah, I declare inviolable the rights of two weak ones: the orphans and women.”

Meaning:

  • “I declare inviolable” (اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُحَرِّمُ) means:
“O Allah, I myself place a sacred boundary over their rights.”
  • This is not just a warning to the people – it is the Prophet asking Allah to protect these two groups under His divine law.
  • The Prophet ﷺ is saying: “Whoever violates them is violating a trust I have placed in front of You, O Allah.”

This means harming women is not just injustice – it’s violating something the Prophet ﷺ made sacred in front of Allah, So if someone wrongs a woman (like neglecting, abusing, humiliating her), it becomes a major sin, and Allah may punish severely.

Denying a Wife’s Lawful Rights Is Disobedience to Allah and His Messenger

📖Sahih Muslim 1218a
The Prophet ﷺ said: Fear Allah concerning women! Verily you have taken them on the security of Allah, and intercourse with them has been made lawful unto you by words of Allah… Their rights upon you are that you should provide them with food and clothing in a fitting manner…”

📖Quran 2:231
“Do not retain them to harm them so that you transgress. And whoever does that has wronged himself.”
→ Men are warned not to misuse their authority during anger.

What this means:

  • “Fear Allah concerning women” – This is not a casual reminder. This is a divine warning.
  • A man doesn’t just answer to society for mistreating his wife – he answers directly to Allah.
  • It’s far more serious than angels cursing a woman – this is Allah warning the man Himself.

Islam makes it very clear:

  • The woman is under Allah’s protection.
  • Mistreating her = breaking Allah’s trust.
  • Just as there’s a warning for women who unjustly refuse their husbands, there’s a greater warning for men who abuse, neglect, or violate their wives’ rights.

So what’s the difference?

If a wife wrongs her husband, angels may curse her at night. If a husband wrongs his wife, Allah commands: “Fear Me!”  That is a much heavier threat – no angel, Allah Himself is watching.
